EA with coupon

I made a reservation with National's Emerald Club using an upgrade coupon. The system is telling me that since I am using the coupon, I need to go to the counter for the reservation. Has anyone else encountered this? Is there a special line at the counter for Emerald Club members or will I have to stand in the regular line with everyone else? I may forego the upgrade if it means I may have to stand in a long line at the counter

You will have to go to the counter and stand in line, but, there is supposed to be a special line for EA members.

Most of the upgrade coupons for National are "subject to availability" and thus are not guaranteed, even if you book ahead using the coupon. That's why you have to go to the counter for that particular coupon (so the agent can "OK" the upgrade) and you usually don't have to go to the counter if you use one of the $$ off coupons. As Gail posted, do take advantage of the special line for EC members - it always goes faster.
