we bought one share thru oneshare.com for each kid. We don't normally buy stock but would like to add to their shares (at least get each kid up to 10 so they'll reinvest the dividend). Have b'day $ to use & they don't NEED anything since it's right after Christmas.

Has anyone used Etrades or know how it works? Will I get hit w/monthly fees if I just buy 4 or 5 shares/year for "presents"? We'd only buy Disney stock ....

You might want to try sharebuilder.....Ive used to it dabble around with my stocks Disney and some other stuff.....allows you to set up when you want to invest and how much. Each single trade costs $4.

For example the third week of everymonth I have it setup to buy Disney stock...for $30....then you add in the $4 transaction feed. This is good if you dont want to buy a lump all at once. You can do traditional as well....depends on the plan you want. I just like the plan of not having to pay monthly fees and only buying stock when I need to.

I know there's an extra cost for this, but you can request that the certificates be sent to you. The Disney certs used to be (and I'm sure still are) quite a little work of art....many folks frame them.

Then the dividend checks would come to you. They're cute....have the little Mickeys all around the border. The kids could deposit them in their accounts. I know this means you wouldn't get the reinvestment feature, but DIS is just paying about 1% and the kids will get checks made out to them.

A lot of companies have DRIP (dividend reinvestment plans) so you might want to see about buying additional shares directly through Disney.

How would someone go about getting Disney stocks? Is this something I can do myself? How much do I start off with?

I need an easy to navigate website please!

We used to have an E*Trade account. Things might have changed but when I set up our account you needed a minimum of $1,000 to open an account. We had gotten some stock through my company's health insurance company demutualization so I used that transferred stock to open the account.

I bought some stock, Disney included, through E*Trade and from what I remember the transaction fee per trade was ~$20. So, it's not worth it to buy a few shares here and there.

I have savings accounts at ING Direct and I notice that ShareBuilder is a subsidiary of ING Bank (I think that's a recent development?). I haven't researched SB yet but from what I've heard their fees are alot lower, there is no minimum to open an account and you can buy partial shares of a stock.

Another option is you could go through the Disney Company directly. Buy shares in your name and then transfer them over to your children:
