E-cigs?

I say smoke it wherever; an e-cig is not 'smoking' ....I would suggest keeping it outdoors just to minimize any negative interactions.

You are not responsible for the behavior of others that would violate the smoking policies/areas. If someone wants to come up to you and light up a cigarette while you're puffing away on that e-cig, that's their bad...not yours.

/me dons the flame suit to deal with the rabid anti-smokers.

Don't worry about any potential "dirty looks" or anything else. Disney does not have a policy against it and the only thing you are exhaling is water vapor. It's not harmful to anyone around you.

Completely agree with this. Our county parks banned all tobacco products years ago due to the influence on the children in them.

..except there's no tobacco in e-cigs, so I don't know how this applies. There's nicotine in ecigs, not tobacco.

Go ahead and smoke it wherever you like! It is not a cigarette! It is no different than the water misters that many people carry at Disney. It will not hurt children and asthmatics. It is water! Why anyone would want to interfere in your enjoyment of a non-cigarette, I don't know. If you want to know the truth, I am more disgusted with gum chewers than smokers anyway. People that chew constantly, popping their gum, and then spitting it on the ground to be stepped in is way worse, in my not so humble opinion! And, no---I am not a smoker!

And as far as "it sets a bad example for kids", to me, it's exactly the opposite.

"Mommy, what does that man have?"

"That man has a little machine that is helping him quit smoking. Smoking is very bad for you, and it is VERY hard to quit once you start. Many people who start smoking are never able to quit, but that man is using that machine to help him."

Even if an e-cig user isn't using it to quit, you can explain to your kids that that is what they are doing, and turn it into a lesson about how HARD quitting something like that is, and how it's best to never even start.

But we aren't ashamed to take the tax money from cigarettes for children! Where do you think the money generated from the sale of tobacco products goes to? Our government, who uses it for many children's programs. If you really believe it is a bad example for kids, then fight to get it outlawed. But then don't cry when the financing for kids programs disappears!

Just curious, is there an age requirement on these things?

Some states have baned them for minors. They are also banned from adding flavoring as they were doing when first introduced that would appeal to minors.

When looking at the research the other day when I first posted on this thread there was concern that children would look at it as a cigarette even if is healthier than a real one and become addicted to the nicotine. There is currently also studies about marketing it as a device to quite smoking if it actually helps in the quitting process.

Then that's the parent's job to teach the child, not some random stranger's job to not do it in front of your kid. I see people do things in front of my kid every day that I don't want her to do, but it's not my problem that they're doing it, it's my problem that I teach my child my opinion on the behavior.

Just going by what the WHO says. My kids know nicotine is a nasty habit.

Where did you see an independent study that it was only water vapor?

I'm just going to say (and I'm sure you'll agree with me Denise) is that this thread has reminded me how much I love living in Michigan, and how fortunate we are to have a non-smoking state :hippie:

Are there studies that say they are more than water vapor?

I've never researched them at all, so don't really understand how they function.

Wisconsin too (since last July!) Yay!

What exactly is a "non-smoking state"?

So, I did a little reading on them and mostly what I found is that there are no good definitive independent studies on them to determine if they are harmful or not. That makes sense to me. So, they could potentially pose a risk that is unknown at this time.

However, in reading how they function, it seems highly unlikely that one could reasonably argue that they aren't at least LESS harmful then tobacco cigarettes. So, I'm confused on why people would be especially opposed to them. It would appear that since they are a nicotine delivery system, they warrant further investigation, but it would appear that they are preferable to the alternative of smoking tobacco.

In regard to the original question, I'd contact Disney myself and ask the question. If Disney says they are not restricted to smoking areas, then you have your answer.

There are a couple that have determined that the "bad" things in them are at such low levels (roughly 1000 times less than in cigarette smoke) that they are extremely unlikely to be a health risk to those using them. There will never be a study that states with absolute certainty that they are completely harmless, they just won't word any conclusion that way. However, I would agree with your implication that further research be done.

What I think the real issue some are attempting inject is that there is some risk from "secondhand vapor", and there simply is not one single shred of evidence to support that notion. Given the extremely low levels of the potential carcinogens found in the cartridge solution itself, and the fact that thus far there isn't any evidence that firsthand vapor is a health risk, it's pretty far fetched to make a serious argument that secondhand vapor is any worse for you than the air you breathe. After all, the air itself contains varying amounts of "dangerous" compounds, it's just that they aren't in high enough concentrations to actually do harm.

It seems that the underlying theme to that argument is nothing more than a select group of people that "don't like it", so they want to forcefully prevent you from doing it. I'm quite sure every one of them has personal habits that I would find distasteful, lucky for them I'm not in the business of attempting to force others to act in accordance with my beliefs.

It seems most of the studies are not independent but by the manufacturers.

Though they may be less harmful for the cigarette smoker there is lack of proof that it is not harmful to people breathing the fumes second hand.

People can avoid smoking areas to decrease second hand smoke exposure.
