E-cigs in restaurants

(a)
Bystanders are exposed to the aerosol exhaled by ENDS users, which increases the background level of some toxicants, 1, 2 nicotine 3 as well as fine and ultrafine particles in the air.

1 Under near real-use conditions, e-cigarettes increased indoor air levels of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, 1,2-propanediol, 1,2,3-propanetriol, glycerine, and aluminium.

**Everything the WHO as listed as a toxin can be not only found in our food we eat, but in products we use to cook with and in products we put on our bodies that get absorbed through our skin. Why is everyone against the e-cigs and their "toxins", but no one cares that they probably just ate the same "toxins" in their lunch. :confused3

As far as the nicotine being addictive, so is coffee. :surfweb:

I have no problem regulating the e-cigs as far as what actually is going in them, or places banning them indoors, but I can't stand the ignorance that surrounds them.

My friend's husband is using e-cigs instead of regular cigarettes or cigars and I have never noticed a smell when he uses his. Is it only certain flavors/types that have a smell, or is my nose broken?

You know it wasn't that long ago that cigarettes were thought to be good for us, or at the very least not harmful at all.

I have the right as a person, and so do my children to not breath this stuff in if we choose not to. It is RUDE to expect people to sit near someone puffing away on some ecig.

I will agree that coffee is addictive, so is caffeine for that matter. Neither of which I choose to consume.

They need to hurry up and regulate these things, they have no business in a doctors office or restaurant just like cigarettes.

You obviously aren't getting my point.... The same ingredients are in the FOOD we consume every day. If they are that bad then they (the "toxins") need to be labeled bad everywhere, not just where society wants to direct their attention.

Your nose is not broken, the scent lasts for mere seconds and then it is gone. It does not linger.

Whatever you inhale goes straight into your bloodstream. When you eat, the food goes through and gets broken down in your digestive system. A very different response in your body.

Also, I choose what to eat and do not eat processed goods (I eat Paleo). I don't have a choice if you are "vaping" near me in an enclosed area.

I still just don't get why "vapers" need flavors. I mean, cigarettes don't come in cherry, watermelon, bubble gum, peppermint, etc. flavors.

Why do the ecigs need to? Why can't they just come in cigarette flavor? Is cherry supposed to make someone vape less?

You may not choose not to eat those things, but I bet you drive in a car/bus/train or walk down the street where one of those things is being driven. I bet you have been to a BBQ in the summer with either a propane/charcoal grill is present. I'm sure you sprayed perfume at some point in time in her life. You are inhaling toxins during all those events.

To claim it is your choice not to inhale that stuff is fine, but don't pretend that everything else you inhale during the day is just fine and dandy.

People have something against e-cigs and they don't have substantial information to back it up, but yet they are being banned everywhere.

I know of another substance (somethings else I don't smoke) that is illegal because certain people want it illegal and they make all kinds of claims as to why it should be illegal which mass media then accepts as the truth. In all honesty it is only illegal because the drug companies would lose BILLIONS of $$$$ if it became legal, not because of it's negative effects it has on people. This is no different than that, and there is no reason that should be illegal either.

Can you image how much money the tobacco companies are losing each year as more people turn to the e-cig? Billions!! Money talks in this world and anyone with money can make the mass population believe anything they want for their own agenda.

Big tobacco is in the e- cig market too.

I am guessing that I know the other smoking substance, and having experience dealing with a family member who is now super paranoid and depressed and has mental issues and has massive anxiety after smoking it for upwards of 40 years, I would say that I believe it SHOULD be illegal.

My biggest problem with e cigs is that they are a huge fad and are becoming so popular. Now, teens are hopping on the e cig train being caught up in all the "flavors." Why a person that smokes or is trying to stop smoking need flavors is beyond me. The flavors--like very cherry and yummy vanilla and tropical mango are what the kids like. So, who is it being marketed too? IMO, teens and kids!! The kids are using this a springboard for other things--also getting addicted to nicotine, which is what the companies want.

No, I do not smoke. Yes, I do have teens and kids. And, yes, we have seen this problem this summer with friends of my daughters. Just another thing for parents to have to worry about.

By your reasoning then, perfumes and colgones should be banned, correct? They do have toxins and they sent my friend to the hospital. I know this one lady came into our office (you know, one of those that you smell the perfume an hour after they leave?). I got dizzy.

I personally think people refuse to read the details and because they look like cigarettes, smoke like cigarettes, they are putting their foot down in the "cause I said so" manner. I don't care for the smelly ones myself, however, there are times I"m sitting next to someone with heavy perfume I don't care for either. I am positive they will do some sort of controlled test to see exactly what comes out in that vapor. If they find there are harmful toxins, then yes treat like a cigarette. I know 4 people who quit smoking due to these e cigs.

Used as a smoking cessation device has helped so many people and I am for this type of marketing. However, with the flavors and the marketing strategy that they are harmless is misleading. And, the fact that the flavors appeal to the younger non tobacco smoking segment is worrisome.

Yes, you do not have to have the nicotine cartridge; but they are now studying how the inhaled vapor affects the lung cells and the impact it will have long term. There has not been enough study to prove or disprove that they are completely safe.

You don't prove safety; you prove harm or lack thereof. "Proving safety" is chasing after a speeding train because there will always be something left to test, some room for doubt based on uncontrollable variables, experimental design, or just plain willful doubt. Lack of any provable harm is generally the standard when it comes to things we consume and right now there's no evidence of harm regarding e-cigs. They're being banned not because of any health issue they pose but rather because they look too much like cigarettes and smoking is heavily stigmatized at the present.

ETA: As far as the marketing to teens/young adults question, that's a tricky one to me. On the surface it does seem like flavors target a younger audience, but at the same time Smirnoff has a full line of candy-flavored vodkas (I recently had a ridiculously sweet smores-themed drink made with marshmallow-flavored Smirnoff and Godiva chocolate liquor) and we don't condemn them for marketing to kids. Adults like sweets too.

If I were a private business I would rather error on the side caution. And as a private business that is a right they have.

BTW, I am not saying e-cigs should be banned completely. However, I am a proponent for restricted use is certain establishments, specifically schools.

I absolutely agree with you there. I think it is perfectly reasonable that schools should update their tobacco policies to include e-cigs. Heck, ours don't even allow candy/gum "cigarettes". And I think it should be left to businesses to set their own e-cig policies. Unfortunately I don't see that happening; too many people these days have issues with the notion that someone somewhere else might not be making the same choices they'd make. I hear a lot of people around me talking about the need to amend the smoking ban in my state to officially include e-cigs, even though very little if any of the reasoning behind the smoking ban applies to e-cigs.

As far as erring on the side of caution, that's just not what we do in this country. No one errs on the side of caution about new preservatives or artificial sweeteners or genetically modified foods or any other newly engineered thing we consume. It is only the association with smoking that makes people so skeptical of e-cigs.

Just my experience on the flavors thing. When I first tried to quit smoking by switching to vaping, I tried to duplicate the flavor of my analog cigarettes as closely as possible. But for some reason, it just wasn't the same, I became discouraged, and the quitting didn't last terribly long. It also didn't help that I was using one of the analog-lookalike e-cigs. They aren't very powerful, and just aren't as satisfying.

This time, I decided to go a whole different route with a different device, and I started sampling different flavors. (Thank heavens for B&M vapor stores now!) WOW... there are some amazing flavors out there!! And so many are so complex... different notes on inhale and exhale, many layers in between. My faves are the sweeter dessert types -- and bonus, no calories, lol.
Bottom line, the myriad of flavors have kept me interested, kept me satisfied, and kept me completely away from cigarettes - happily. After 30 years of smoking more often than not, that is huge for me.

I honestly don't see these as a "gateway" to anything else for young people. If you have never been addicted to nicotine, you don't crave it, and can vape 0mg without ever wanting anything else. I have an 18 year old myself -- and of all the many, many things I have, do, and will worry about in regards to him as any parent tends to do, the whole e-cig thing isn't one of them.

OMG!! That sounds heavenly! :faint:
