Dyson Vacuums Worth the Money?

I HATE my dyson! I've had it for 5 yrs and the only reason I kept it that long was because it was still under warranty. It spent more time at best buy being serviced than it did at home with me. Maybe we just got a dud vacuum but best buy refused to replace it. they did tell me that they get more dysons come back for service than any other vacuum they sell. My neighbor has the same one I do and they don't like it either. My warranty is now up so the next time it quits working into the trash it will go.

Not sure what problems you've had but I will say that the reason we have ours is because my mother bought it and it "broke." She took it back to Costco, it was replaced and the new one "broke" also. She called Dyson and after not being able to figure out the problem they sent her a new one so she had this "broken" one and a brand new. The new one "broke" also. Turns out there is a safety setting and when the fringe on the area rugs was being vacuumed it shut itself down. It was an easy fix just pushing a button but it took someone who had experience (not even a Dyson rep) to let her know about the feature. Since we now know about this thing neither she nor I have had any problems with them.

I've had my DC18 Animal for YEARS and I love it. The hose recently cracked and I ordered a replacement hose from Amazon for $24. While I was poking around the hose I found out that I had a blockage that I cleared and now it's sucking just like it used to!

I've had my Dyson Animal for about 7 years, love it. We bought a Eureka for upstairs because the Dyson is too heavy to carry, it is not good!

I have never owned a Dyson, but I do read Consumer Reports and Dysons never get very good ratings. Vacuums are rated in the most recent issue (March 2013); you might want to take a look. The Dyson Animal is rated #24 of the uprights rated, two more Dysons are rated, coming in at #40 and #41. The top rated bagged upright is the Hoover Windtunnel Anniversary edition ($230).

Seem to be many better and much cheaper choices than Dysons.

A quick check at Amazon shows that people who bought vacuums seem to be happier with Dyson. I remember reading that Dyson got poor reviews on Consumer Reports, but got one anyway since people seemed to love them. I'm very pleased, and now I kind of doubt the usefulness of Consumer Reports, especially since word of mouth passes so quickly with the Internet.

And good for them. You just need to keep in mind that you're paying a premium price for their advertising and name. Personally, I have no stake in the issue.

I have no idea what you mean by Consumer Reports not being useful because "word of mouth" passes so quickly on the internet.

A couple of my friends have them. They said the older models were great but since Dyson became the "it" vacuum they have cheapened them and they aren't as good. They are coasting on the name and reputation. Kind of like Le Cellier ;-)

The problem was that it would not pick up anything. It had great suction with the attachments but nothing when just vacuuming. Every time we took it back it would be sent to dyson and they would replace parts and it would work for a few weeks then no suction again. I always clean the filters and beater bar and my husband takes the air compressor and blows the dust out of every place he can reach. Sometimes that worked and other times it made no difference so back to dyson it went. We have no area rugs and nothing with fringe just wall to wall carpeting

I used to feel that way about Dyson too, but I finally drank the koolaid and have not been disappointed. FTR, I bought more than one vacuum that was "highly rated" by Consumer Reports over the years and they didn't last nearly as long or work as well as my Dyson.

We bought our first Dyson 6/7yrs ago and its still going strong. Its amazing.
However around Christmas I got a Dyson ball (don't remember which one but its a full-size) and its just not as good. The suction isn't as good, the attachment barely picks anything up (our old one picks up everything-its strong!) and it just gets clogged MUCH easier than our old Dyson. I do however love how it automatically adjusts on different surfaces. We keep the new one downstairs b/c we have wood and random area rugs and carpets. Its SO much easier to vacuum now.... but its just not as good.

Totally second this opinion. My old dyson was Amazing. I ,klutz that I am, dropped it down the stairs more than once. Eventually cracked a piece so it kept falling off (but still worked). Got a new one this Fall- ball model, animal - Clogs much more frequently just not as good overall. In fairness our house has a lot of animal hair - 3 furry dogs and a cat and the vaccuum gets multiple times a day use, So much so my mom once asked where I keep the vaccuum and I hesitated and realized I don't store it anywhere- it is always OUT! Oh and the attachment hose is ALWAYS CLOGGED -Little suction and it is a pain to clean it out- don't remember that from my old one! It is very easy to maneuver though, great on my bad back!

I've had a Dyson for eight years. It does a good job, but I don't think I'll buy another when this one goes; it's just too heavy. I bought a Shark for upstairs and I'm really happy with that one.

We've had our Dyson for 8 years now and I do love it but there are some things I don't love about it.

It's heavy so lugging up and down stairs really sucks. It doesn't have the cord that you pull and it winds itself back up. So I have wrap it and wrap it and wrap it after using it.

Lastly, using the attachments is a bit of a chore. Pulling the stick part out and reattaching on the other end then you put on the piece you want and switch the brush mode off. Too much work just to do a quick corner or under the tv or whatever.

In all positiveness we have a Golden Retriever and it works great on dog hair. Never loses suction, just like the commercial says.

Hated mine. Bought one. It was in the shop more often than home (and no, it wasn't the safety setting). Best Buy finally did replace mine, but the new one had the same issue. Neither of them had sufficient suction to clean. I finally gave it away.

I have a fifteen year old Oreck I love and a Meile that is now probably five years old that I adore.

The Dyson is near the top of "bad purchases I have made."

I really like mine, it does the best work of any vacuum that I've ever had. I just wish I could motivate myself to do it more often.

We have the more expensive Animal model. I do like the cleaning power of it. I don't like how heavy it is. We had an Oreck for years and after using that lightweight machine...the Dyson seems so heavy. Their customer service is GREAT Though. Our canister had to be replaced several months ago and they sent us a new one really fast. We have two dogs so for us...it works great. Will I get another one when this one dies....not sure. It is just heavy.

I've had the purple animal for 10 years. I replaced the hose last year when it became brittle and cracked but otherwise no issues. I averaged a new sweeper every year so I have been thrilled I haven't had any problems. It is a pain to carry up and down the stairs but other ones were too.

I have the pink dyson from 6 years ago, and I still love love love it!!! We have a English springer and a shepherd/hound mix and they shed HORRIBLE!!!! My dyson has no problems what so ever getting the hair up. I love that the canister empties it self and you don't have to touch the gunk that gets picked up. My canister will be completely full and it still cleans. I have had it backed into the hose before(not intentionally) anne it was still sucking as if it were empty.

I was talking to someone who was recently working on a vacuum commercial, he said in between takes of the "star" machine, they would pull out a dyson to make sure everything was clean for the closeups.

I don't have a dyson, so I can't judge. I know my vacuum is not very good at all and I'd like to get one.

In March 2013 Consumer Reports, top four Bagless Uprights (CR Best Buys) are:

LG Kompressor LuV350P for $400
Hoover Windtunnel T-Series Rewind Bagless UH7012 $130
Eureka Airspeed AS1000A $120
Bissell CleanViwe Helix Deluxe NV352 $100

All are rated much higher than the Dyson 24 that you are looking at. And that one costs $430 according to CR.

I bought a Eureka Boss Smart Vac for about $80 on CR recommendation many years ago. I still have it and it still works great.
