Dyson vacuum's worth the money?

we have two dysons (i knew i wouldn't be able to handle it if ours ever broke, so bought another, just in case )
our older is about 6 years (which never broke, btw), the younger about 4. after having almost every brand vacuum, which would always lose suction by a year, and many broken within 2 years (our last non-dyson was a kenmore which lasted 13 months, 1 month longer than the warranty:mad:) we decided that it would be cheaper not to replace a $2-300 vacuum every 2 years.

neither has needed any repairs, and suction on them is the same as day one .(amazing!!) one i bought at kohls, the other at bb&b, both with a coupon. we'll never own a different brand:lovestruc

Love my dyson animal. I had mine for at least 5 years and it still works as great as day 1. I use it a least 2-3 times a week, even vacuum my car with it, worth every penny!

We've had ours for 5 years, but I'm not sure I'd buy another one. (ETA: It is the purple "animal" version.)

It doesn't work as well now as it did in the first year. (If you look carefully at their "never loses suction" claim, the little asterisk leads to a note that says "as measured after 10 oz. of dust." Um...I'm pretty sure I picked up 10 oz. of dust in the first day!)

It also has a bad smell now when you run it (like dog). I have cleaned all the cleanable pieces per the instructions (which is what Dyson told me to do), but it still stinks. I've read online that other people have the problem and the only way to solve it is to run water through a piece that Dyson told me absolutely *not* to get wet. So... now I don't know what to do. If I "wash it," I might ruin it (Dyson said I would), but on the other hand, the dog smell isn't so great either. :(

I liked it for the first year or two. My husband even called it his "dream vacuum" (I don't personally *have* a dream vacuum! :rolleyes1 )... but now he curses the thing.

We are on our second Dyson. The first one was an all floor model and was great for many years but started to not perform well after about five years mainly because of the dog hair in the brush. The brush had to be cleaned after every use. We replaced it this year with the Animal because of our golden retriever’s hair and a brush head designed for dog hair. If this had been our first Dyson I would never consider buying another. Maybe we just got a lemon but it doesn’t suck and that isn’t a good thing. The spring in the handle broke and had to be repaired and our rug is never free of dog hair. It’s a heavy and even on bare floors leaves tons of dirt. Oddly, when using the telescopic arm the suction is great and I find I use that to vacuum my wood floors. As is I would be skeptical to invest in another.

We had the animal - hated it after a couple of years it lost its suction big time. Had it fixed cost over $100 and then within days it went again. It went in the garbage and my aunt bought us as a Christmas Present the Bissel Pet one and I love it. I would never buy another Dyson. Not worth the money. There are other threads on this topic. Please do more research before purchasing. THey are known for loss of suction.

we had to empty the canister after each room,
That's one of the reasons I hate my Dyson. I spent so much time and energy running back to my garage to empty the canister, and mine smells, too. Plus my cansister is now being held in place with duck tape...kept falling off. I recently purchased an Electrolux canister and I love it. Much lighter than the Dyson, too.

I love mine!

its 2 yrs old, bought it at Costco and it is a upright. The suction is still the same as the first day! I actually have to watch when I use the attachments as it has been known to find those lost socks under the couch and I just take them out when I dump it. I have laminate and carpet and it works great on both.
The downfall is by far the lugging up and down the stairs. It is heavy!

Have one of the older models for about 3-4 years now, purchased from Overstock. It's awesome. It's getting older, but at the same time, our young kids have made messes that have done nothing short of beating the heck out of the poor vacuum.

I'd get another without hesitation.

and am so glad I did.

I used to have an Electrolux canister [back when they were their own company] and LOVED it. Spent $350 on it 10 years ago. one day I sucked up water accidently.....done. Boo hoo.

Didn't have money yada yada. Bought a $50 Eureka Optima which if money's tight, etc. works ok. It's bagless, etc.

But had some money and had been wanting a Dyson 'I thought'. Read all the pros and cons and still wanted one...thinking I'd wait for a DEAL [<$400]...

Thankfully, I was able to borrow my SIL's Dyson. It worked but man it was heavy and cumbersome. Didn't like the way the hose came out [it was the old style wand]. And it is only good for carpets so I would have to stick to my broom or get another vacuum for hard woods....
our entire first floor is hard woods and tile.

I was still considering it.....but then we decided to go with a frieze carpet. Not shaggy crazy but definitely frieze and read and heard that Dysons don't do as well on the frieze....

Ended up spending $900 on a Miele Canister. It's FANTASTIC. Works on carpet, throw rugs, and my wood floors!! Woo Hoo!! Came with attachments, 2 years of bags and filters, a bare floor attachment and carpet attachment. It's so light and quiet too! 10 year warrantly; lifetime HEPA, will only spend about $30 a year on bags. Really happy. I vacuum more [it's FUN] and my hardwoods are actually 'clean'. My wood stairs are dust free too!

Can't believe I spent that much!:rotfl:

I have a Meile...its a great vaccuum. It isn't an inexpensive vaccuum, but its a great vaccum.

Mine is about 5 years old and starting to give me trouble. When you suck something up that gets stuck (like the edge of a throw rug or blanket) it will make this awful noise but now mine does this randomly just vaccuming, I was told the clutch is probably going....not sure where that is on it LOL

Every "item" is going to get good and bad reviews. On another board somone posted they had to change the belt 3 times in 3 years and that the repair shop he brought his to said he's always repairing dysons. Not sure if I would spend the money to buy another but up until the noise I've had no issues with it :)

Another fan of Dyson. I've had mine for more than 2 years, maybe 3 and it is going strong. We have 3 cats and a large dog and lots of hair. We also have sons living at home still so the amount of tracked in crud is quite high. My cleaning lady loves it too.

That's what mine did from day one. It was in the shop three times, they gave me a new one, and that one did the same thing. And I NEVER had good suction on either of mine.

I have 5 pets 2 with long hair and LOVE my dyson animal ball. The ball is great makes it so easy to vaccum around things!

I have 3 cats, one of which is long haired, and a Newfoundland.

I LOVE my Dyson!!! Can't live without it!!!

We've had our animal dyson for over 2 years now. It was great when we 1st got it, but it lost suction very quickly. It spends more time at best buy then here with us. we still have it because it is still under warranty and they will keep fixing it. it lasts a few weeks and then back it goes. the day the warranty runs out you will find it at the curb waiting for the garbage man

I have had my animal dyson for close to 5 years now. I can honestly say it was the best thing for my home I ever purchased. It has lost none of its suction power and still amazes me at how much it picks up. I too got it at Kohls with the 30% off. I have never had one problem with it. Before the dyson I went thru probaby 2-3 hoovers in 3 years.

As most reviewers will tell you this is a powerful vacuum and does suck up alot of dust. That is a good thing, of course. I have had mine for quite at least 3 years and although it does a good job it is not a perfect machine.

The cons-
- very heavy, I would not recommend one for my 80 yr old mother in law
- awkward attachments that my husband can still not figure out. I love using attachments but skip them sometimes because it is just so much hassle
-works poorly are tile or wood floors. Only picks up when pulling backwards. When pushing forward it just blows stuff around. Therefore I pick it up and then only pull back with it. HEAVY and a waste of time.
-if it falls over easily, which it does almost everytime I use the attachments because they are so awkward, and the plastic can crack. I have multiple cracks on my Dyson.
-I clean out my beater brush every week with scissors. We have family members with long hair and it wraps around the brush. Maybe I would have to do this with other vacuums as well, but thought I would mention it.
-Too tall to do under any furniture. I can't get under my coffee table or kitchen chairs, so you must move everything.

:scared1: I'm having a hard time convincing my DH to buy a $400 vacuum (since I tend to go through them so fast), if I told him I wanted a $900 vacuum I'm pretty sure he would collapse to the floor. :rotfl2: I appreciate the review and I'm sure that is an excellent vaccuum, but definatley out of our price range, or at least my poor DH's price range. I'm by no means dissing your vaccum, please don't take this that way. I'm just laughing at the thought of what my DH would say.
