Dying your Slip?

So I was on here earlier this week and I saw where one DB dyed their slip. I have been totally wanting to do this!

But i am scared, we are doing the Trash the Dress and I am afraid if I dye my slip hot pink then when we get into the water at the park the dye will come off on my dress. I am not worried that the slip color will fade, i am worried that i will end up with a pink dress.

Any thoughts?

Make sure to add some salt to the mix, it usually instructs that on the packages. It helps to make the color stay. If you are concerned you can soak the slip in clean water after. If it's still coming off easily, you can repeat the soaking until you feel safe about it. Think of it like hair dye, it doesn't just rub off. If it's heavily dyed and damp, it might rub a bit, but it won't soak through or anything.

I dyed mine not to long ago and it was easy. My wedding isn't for another 2 years so the dye has a while to set in. I'm also doing Trash the Dress with Vicki and David Arndt so I guess I will find out then, but hey I'm there to TTD anyways right??

Is the dying a huge process? What kind of dye would be the best to use for this? Do you add vinegar? I've only tried to dye something once and I made a big mess.

Pick up some Dylon from walmart and follow the directions! The colors seem to be true to the package, but you will have to stir constantly to make sure it doesn't streak or anything.

Dharmatrading dot com also has a dye that you just add to the washer with the item you want dyed
It's called iDye

I've used them for handkerchiefs and it worked brilliantly!

The dye you'll need will depend on the fabric. Animal fibers, other natural non animal fibers and synthetic fibers all need different types of dye and a different dying process (hot water, cold water, mordants, vinegar etc). So long as you use the right dye and right process you shouldn't need to worry abut the colour running. I would also recommend having a test run on a sample of the fabric to make sure it comes out how you'd hope. Alternatively there are dyeing services out there who will do it for you.

I recommend IDye, I've had really good luck with that being very simple. Just fill washer with hot water, add packet, fabric and salt, let simmer, then complete cycle. It even works for front loads as well, just throw it all in to begin with and leave it to soak for a bit. You can find it in stores now, too.

I know it's sold at Jo-Ann fabrics and Hancock fabrics. Both Dharma trading and Dick Blick sell it online as well.

Like some one else already mentioned, use salt.

When I was in HS I did color guard & marching band, our school colors were red and white so our costumes were usually these colors as well.. to keep the red from bleeding into the white we were always told to hand wash them in the sink with salt and then wash them regular. It worked amazingly and the red never bled onto anything.

Trash the dress is a photo shoot where you "trash the dress" it can be anywhere. Many brides do it at the beach getting in the water splashing around, some at the water parks going down slides, etc., and some do it at the beach at GF. Possibilities are endless, it makes for great pictures and is so much fun!!!
