Dyeing children's hair

Do you think this is an ok thing? At what age do you think its appropriate? Normal colors or crazy colors?

I was just sitting here thinking about it today. My 6 year old daughter has said she wants pink hair. I told her when she 16 or 18 maybe lol

She reminded me that a boy from her kindergarten class had a blue mo-hawk last year (it was wash out out dye and it was for his birthday)

Anyways what are your thoughts?

Personally I'm not sure what i think about dyeing your child's hair while they are in elementary school not even normal colors. I didn't dye my hair until I was 20 years old lol

I've seen a couple of girls with fun streaks in later elementary, and many girls with streaks, died hair, and highlights in middle school. If dd13 wanted a streak, I'd have no problem (no highlights - her hair is platinum!). So my answer is middle school.

Hmmm, that's a tough one. I think I'd have an easier time having her dye her hair pink with a wash-out type of dye, just for the fun of it, than with dying it a regular color that's permanent. Six is too young to be thinking her hair color isn't "good enough" and that she needs to dye it to look better. But the fun colors aren't as serious.

If you have a Claire's near you, they usually have clip-ins that you could get for her if you don't want to dye her hair. They have cute colors normally like hot pink, blue, purple, green. They just look like cute little barrettes and have long hair extensions attached to them.

My girls use the colored clip ons for their hair. The temporary sprays you have to be careful with...my very blonde daughter used the orange spray for last halloween....we were still washing it out at christmas and I'm not kidding!

A friends DGD (just turned 13) "had" the most gorgeous (natural) curly, platinum blonde hair since birth - just stunning.. Well - mom allowed her to have it dyed a dark auburn brown a year ago - which looked awful with her skin coloring.. After a month or so, the child decided she didn't like it anymore and wanted her "old" hair back..

They have spent most of the past year going from one top notch hairdresser to the next - spending close to a thousand dollars - trying to restore it to what it was (without having to cut it off).. No luck.. It's like straw now - all of the curl is gone - and the only option left is to have it cut super, super short and hope that it grows back in the way it used to be.. Kid is having a fit - doesn't want super, super short hair - but also hates what she has ended up with..

A streak or two of something that's not permanent - just to have fun for a few days - would probably be okay, but I personally would not allow my kids to do anything "permanent" to their hair until they were seniors in high school..

It's definitely a personal choice, but just thought you might be interested in hearing about a RL experience that went horribly wrong..

My girls are 13 & 9, they both started school with streaks, 1 had red, the other had blue. We use the washout color from Sally's and it fades really fast. They are ready to do it again, this time maybe purple. But, only streaks, no actual coloring, they are too young for that.

For a 6 yr old I would go with anything that fades in a cpl of days or clip in stuff. The rest .. no way until at least middle school and has to be case by case. I am ok with highlights etc, but I know how much it costs for me and I am going to be willing to spend that on my girl that would change her mind the next week.. prob not!!

I did my girls' hair last Sept for the MNSSHP. They each wanted black hair. I didn't want wigs because it was going to be hot and I figured I'd end up carrying them all night. Also, rain was in the forcast, so I didn't want the stuff that would wash right out because I didn't want a big mess if it did rain. I used the temporary coloring and eventually it all came out. No harm. No foul. Oh, and they were 9 and 6 at the time.

I saw a girl that was maybe 9 or 10 in the salon one time I was there that got a really cute cut with pink highlights. It looked really good on her. The cut was very spikey and looked very punk rocker-ish. I probably wouldn't dye the whole head pink or any other color, but a few highlights wouldn't hurt.

It could be a problem with school though. I know our handbook says hair may not be in unnatural colors.

I have two little ones in my grade one class with dyed hair. One has blond highlights in his dark brown hair, and the other one has blue in his hair. I know the blue washes out, because he's done it a few times. The other one is a permanent color. Personally, I think grade one is a little young for hair coloring when it doesn't wash out...

I let my DD get purple streaks last year. She was 13. It looked really cute, and placed where she could comb her hair and cover it if need be.

I just do not believe in coloring children's hair. I'd highlight a teen's hair and and I might consider using a semi-permanent color on a teenager but never less than a teen.

It is big business and the sooner you get them dependant on hair color the better for the pro and/or color companies. It may not be wrong for someone else but it is wrong for me. I won't be making money off children's haircolor.

Thanks for this! Between Halloween and DD's upcoming birthday, she really wanted to add color or sparkles, this is a good compromise.

Someone posted some really cute tinsel thingies for hair awhile back, those were cute too.

Right now my 9 year old is sporting Blue hair- not the spray in stuff, we had it done at a salon. we did the bottom 4-6 inches of it blue- bright bright blue. When Grandma first heard she was doing it she was having a fit. Once she saw it she really liked it! If she gets tired of the color its easy enough to cut 6 inches of her hair off.

I'm very surprised that so many kids are allowed to go to school with crazy colored hair. I don't mean surprised that the parents allow it...but that the schools do. Where I grew up in Florida, we were not allowed to go to school with any unnatural hair colors that could cause a "distraction"...so blonde, black, red were okay....blue, pink, green, etc. were not.

I teach elementary school now, and we had a bunch of kids come to school with crazy hair...on Crazy Hair Day last week, LOL. Otherwise, we do not really have any kids with dyed hair...maybe a few 6th graders with highlights or tips colored, but nothing aside from that.

DD wants blue streaks in her hair. I will let her get them but.... she has to get all As and Bs first. Plus she has to earn the money doing chores around the house.

Since I put the grade stipulation on it she has improved her grades drastically. She is a bright kid but has to work at it in school and this has given her a much need motivation.

In the mean time we have the colored clip ins. She loves them but her hair is fine so they are hard to keep in.
