Dwarf Hamster Itching Problems

DD (student) has a pet dwarf hamster she bought earlier this summer. He's been doing fine until recently when he's starting itching a lot. She lives about 80 miles from home on campus with no car so getting to the vet is not easy.

Anyone familiar with drawrf hamsters?

I am wondering if it is the bedding material causing itching or if he has has mites.

I had a dwarf hamster while in college and she passed away right after I graduated this May. I had noticed she was itching a lot more than usual and went to the vet immediately. He thought she could have an allergy to plastic so we changed out as much as possible and the itching still continued. He gave us a prescription that was really quite cheap to put on her eyes twice a day since her eyes were watery too. When she had the ointment on the eyes it seemed the itching was less as were here watery eyes. I do know that hamsters do have allergies to certain beddings. I used the recommended PetCo brand, it was always about $6/bag I remember and was gray or you could get white for a dollar more.
