DVD storage

I am packing up a bookshelf. Is it safe to store DVD’s in a hot garage? Will it warp them? It’s Texas heat here, thank goodness should be cooling off soon!

Unless it's REALLY hot, I would think they'd be fine. They're a pretty hard plastic, not like vinyl.

they should only be stored in under 80 degree temps otherwise they can warp. if space is a consideration you could get a dvd/cd storage folder that holds over 250 and only takes up less than a square foot of space (about $20 on amazon). yes, you will have to remove them all from their boxes but if you do it in an organized manner you can box up their cases for safe garage storage and when you are ready to put them back do a box at a time (though some people prefer having them in a folder that they can just flip through).

Hi Mrs. Milo,
You might want to check Wayfair or Overstock for under-the-bed DVD organizers and they are big enough to put your DVDs in and if you have more DVDs you can buy two or three more and when you want to watch a movie you can unzip the DVD organizer take out the DVD and then when you're done put it back in the organizer and zip it closed. I got a bunch of these when I got loads of DVDs and my entertainment center was full with little space for new DVDs I had got so I went to Target and got the DVD organizers and they work wonders and I put my DVD organizers under my bed in my old house and today the DVD organizers are in my closet

I'm not sure what part of Texas, but we're Houston area and DH lost a portion of his CD and DVD collection by leaving them in the garage (and some in his truck). We found that it's not so much the DVDs and CDs but the materials they're stored in. We had original plastic cases and sleeves from multi disc carriers melt onto the discs, which ultimately destroyed them. Ultimately, it just gets way too hot here to trust it.

I think that a garage in Texas is probably too hot. The plastic layers might seperate. I might ask, if you are packing them up, do you need to keep them at all? You could sell them - they aren't worth too much these days, but a few bucks probably.

I agree and would never store them in a hot garage. The plastic could warp making them unreadable. Are these old movies or computer data? If computer data, I wouldn't just toss them in the trash in the event you have things like copies of old tax returns/etc. on them. Old movies might be something you could sell at a garage sale. If something you no longer want/need, might be better off tossing in the trash instead of the effort to box up for moving when you might never use.

I would not store them in a garage or attic.

I took all of my DVDs out of their cases, put all the empty cases in a tote and store that away.

Then I got sleeves for the DVDs and put them all in a fabric photo or shoe size bin. It takes up practically no space and I keep them in a closet, or you could put under the bed.

You can also get reasonably priced storage for CD jewel boxes at IKEA.
