DVD recorder help

I want to get my husband a DVD recorder for Christmas. I want it to be able to copy our VHS tapes to DVD as well as record to DVD from the TV. Would appreciate recommendations if you have one. Also anything else I should be aware of or be looking for.

Perhaps this is no help, but I tried a Poloroid - it wouldn't even work with the tv much less record.

Then a Sony - couldn't get a good picture with it so I took that one back too.

So far, we just have a plain ,old , boring DVD/VHS player but at least it works.

I bought my parents an Emerson for Christmas last year.

I will warn you to be careful about what type of DVD-Rs you need to buy. There are + and - types, which is usually clearly marked on the box. But what we didn't know is that it can only use 4x speed DVD-Rs. I had bought 8x and they wouldn't work. There was nothing written in the (very long) direction book at all. My dad finally had to call the customer service number to find out the problem. Since then, no problems.

My mom has transferred any number of old VHS tapes to DVD. She loves it because now she organize the movies better.

No advice but a word of caution. You will NOT be able to copy prerecorded VHS movies to DVD due to copy protection that was used on those tapes. As long as you are just going to copy VHS tapes that you have made, there should be no problem.

We have the Sony VX500. We love it!!!!! I can't find it on the Sony site, but here is the VX515, which I am sure is very similar, probably just the newer version. We have no problem recording our VHS tapes to DVD and then playing them on any DVD player. We also burn our Panasonic MiniDV recorder tapes onto DVD. Works quite well for us!!!!!

We have a Panasonic DMR-E80H. It is very good. We had one before and had a problem with the hard drive. Fortunately, we had an extended warranty. Good luck with your decision!
