DVD question

just bought a new dvd recorder which states it also plays region 2 is this the american format for dvds? just wanted to know so I knoe whether to bother buying any when I go over

America is Region 1

Region 2 is the standard DVD format for Europe. so all DVD players sold here should play region2

You need a multiregion DVD player

Depending on make and model, you may be able to 'hack' the DVD recorder by entereing a certain set of key presses on your remote control to play DVDs from any region.
