This may seem like a really stupid question but please bare with me. We are being our ACTIVE 2 1/2 year old son to Disney for the first time in October. We have a portable DVD player to help keep him busy on the plane. My question is.....how do they listen to it? Do you use headphones? How do you get them to keep them on? Do they even make them small enough for their heads?

Sorry I have so many questions but I am so scared/excited about taking this trip!

Mine used the earbud type that you put in your ears. We had a set that was "child sized". I think we got them at Best Buy. When he was even smaller, though, we just turned the sound down really low and didn't worry about headphones. Trust me, nobody else could hear it at all. We were sitting in the seat next to him and we couldn't even hear it. Planes are really loud!

There was just a very long thread about this go back a few pages and the concensus was people can hear the DVD players if used without headphones and DO NOT like hearing them. So take the player and insist on using headphones or no sound. One idea was tell them you only can use it with headphones don't let them know it works any other way. Yes they do make them small and if you insist they will use them or no player. 2 1/2 is an ok age they can play and color and watch things, now 18 mos is a bit harder. WE had a very fun trip when my DS was 2 1/2.

Sorry, but nobody could hear ours. You had to put your ear right down to the speaker to hear it. I was sitting in the seat right next to it and I couldn't hear it at all. We even asked the person sitting in front of him if it was bothering her, and she said she didn't even know we had it on. He was mostly just interested in the pictures anyway at that point.

Now the two slightly intoxicated guys sitting behind us on that flight, well EVERYBODY on the entire plane could hear them . . .

Our 3 yr old DD is entertained by our portable DVD player for about 10-15 minutes or so, but that's about it, regardless of what movie is playing. At that age, I don't think the attention span is there yet to make it through a full movie (however our 5.5 yr old DD could watch for hours if we let her). As far as the headphones go, our 3 yr old won't keep them on and most headphones won't fit her anyway, while our 5.5 yr old thinks they are cool.

I bought my 2 year old headphones from gearforkidz.com they were about $20 and fit great, so much nicer that trying to keep adult sized ones on her.

I think, if it isn't too late, that letting your kids think the only way they can hear the movie is through headphones is a wonderful idea.

I am ashamed to say I was a part of that thread about headphones that got way outta hand...I suggest you convince your kids to use them, if at all possible. I think there are far louder and worse noises on the plane, but quite a few DISers do NOT agree.

Keeping an active toddler happy on a plane can be a challenge, but don't worry...you'll get through it. A movie is one of many things you can try. Does he have a favorite show or character? Make sure those are the dvds you take. I also take plenty of snacks, drinks, a magna doodle, paper and crayons...all sorts of little quiet things to keep my DD busy.

I also try to avoid letting her get up to go potty too soon, because once she realizes that she can get up and move around, it is more difficult to stop. (maybe I am mean, but I put a pullup on her even though she is potty trained. I once had pee all over her clothes, the sit n stroll and on myself when I picked her up, out of the seat--yucky).

Kids fly all the time, some fare better than others, but they all get to where they are going ( I assume).

Enjoy Disney

I got my DD3 ear phones from Wal-mart. They are the kind you do not put in your ears and they adjust perfect to her head and she is little. I think I may have paid $3 for them. I made a big deal out of them and we call them her ears. Told her if she wants to watch she has to wear them. She loves them and would rather watch that way. Don't waste $$ on them online when you can get them cheap at Wal-mart. :sunny:

My DS7 tried to use his DVD player on SW on our May trip. I say tried because the headphones didnt help keep out the airplane noise, nor did the earbuds. He finally gave up and we just colored. On the trip back I stopped in Brookstones and purchased a new set of earbuds for $20. They fit his ears perfectly. I tried them and they even fit me perfectly. I was so impressed I purchased 2 of them. I now use mine with my MP3 player. Oh and they great thing is they come attached to something that when U pull on the ends it rewinds into itself and takes up about as much room as my MP3 player. No long cords to tangle and get messed up. They also block out a great deal of noise from around U.

Ok so then I get on the plane (Delta) U guessed it it was an old Song plane so it had the TV in the back of the seat. I am still glad I purchased the earbuds as I use mine at work daily. I put the Mp3 player in my pocket and the wire up the inside of my outfit. SHHH no one knows I have it on. We are not allowed to listen to music it is to distracting to the other people in the office. :stir:
