need help picking a pair of walkie talkies. what brands are the best for 5 mile range? 2 mile range?

what type of battery is best -aa-aaa-nicad?

I use aa NiMH and NiCaD rechargeable batteries by Monster powercells in my digital camera. Can they be use in the walkie talkies so I can recharge them in my charger?:D :D

We use the Motorola talkabout 250. I think the best kind to get is a set that you can pick the channel and a code. We had friends with us that could only choose the channel, and they would get everyone elses conversations. They use 3 AA for each radio, and a set would last us the week.

We just bought and used our Motorola Talkabout T5400's for our trip two weeks ago. They use 3 AA batteries in each talkie. They are still working (we went camping this weekend and the kids used them). They worked great at each park (never tried a park-to-park talk). At MK we were even able to talk with our friends who had a different brand of talkies (but we all tuned to the same channel/sub-channel). However, at Animal Kingdom, we were unable to communicate with our friends. I understand AK is the largest SQ of all the parks so perhaps we were outside of our 2 mile range? We were still able to communicate with each other, tho. We consider this one of the best items we bought for our trip this year. Good luck!

The 5 mile range GMRS radios, technically require a license to operate. The 2 mile (yeah right) FRS radios do not. The Motorolas are probably the most popular and most readily available. I have a pair of Kenwoods and a pair of Motorolas, both compatible with each other and both work great. Just to give you an idea of the range you can expect from FRS radios I was at the candy store in the MK over by Frontierland and was able to communicate with my DW over at the concession stand near Astro Orbitrer in Tomorrowland, any farther than that consider your self lucky or in an open field. There was a lot of talk about hese awhile back, but I think the search feature is still turned off.

We used a set of Motorola's on our last year and I have a couple of recommendations.
I am buying another set and will choose a set that has the following features:

1). Vibrate alert - We were real annoyed when other peoples went off during shows.
2). Clips - Some convenient way to attach to your clothes.
3). Weather resistent - showers and spill proof.

I have not actually found all of these w/out the GMRS options but I'm trying!

DH keeps saying that he will just borrow a set of walkies from some friends who use them for hunting. I would assume that they are the 5 mi. ones. Ihave asked him to find out more about them but he keeps dragging his heels. He is planning to just get them right before we leave.

How will I know if they are the kind that require a license?

What happens if we use them and don't have a license? Who checks those things????
