DVCers Who Fly AirTran

Sammie,

Do you fly AirTran regularly? If so, do you really think the $ to book advance seats is necessary? We have 4 flying down in Dec, one of whom is a 4 YO. Do I have to worry about him sitting alone??

Not regularly, I fly whatever I can get for good fares. I do like thier planes though.

As stated the 4 year would not have to sit alone. I just prefer to be in the front of the plane and window and the side with only 2 seats and if I can pay $5 and already make a seat selection then it's worth it to me. Of course I can see the extra money for families might not be worth it, but $10 for me is a good deal.

Thats good to know. Personally I don't like Air Tran but if I'm stuck with having to pay a higher fare on Jet Blue or a cheap fare on Air Tran I'll probably take the Air Tran knowing I can book seats for an additional $5.

Thanks for the post Sammie, I just took advantage of this service. With 3 adults and 4 kids flying, I am glad I got us all seated together. Was worried about being broken up. Best $70 spent towards our first DVC trip! thanks again

Booked ours last week was glad to be able to use most of a credit i had languishing in my account

FYI:

1) If you are on a connecting flight, you only pay the $5 once pp

2) You can change your mind as to which seats you select. Checked yesterday & better seats opened up

Evidently, row 15 is the magic #; was the best on all legs of our trip.

Thanks for the info. We had booked flights for a July trip, and I was worried that the kids would be alone. I was able to get seats in row 16 & 17 both ways. Definitely worth $40. knowing we are all seated together.

Same here, someone gave me a heads up and yesterday I chose my seats..Row 15 going..17 coming back. I'll be with two grandchildren who have never flown and my youngest daughter. I was really stressed that we would be split up especially coming back. Thanks for posting!

I am glad it was useful to everyone. I know many times everyone here is so busy they don't frequent the other forums and it was just too good of news not to share. As stated especially on the return trip it is hard to get to a computer and book a seat within the 24 hours.

The DIS comes through again.

Thanks for the info, Sammie. I have a flight to NYC coming up next week and was able to select our seats. It is $5 for a one-way flight, even if you change planes, so it is $10 for RT, even though I selected 4 seats (2 each way).

I called to see if I could change to bulkhead because my husband has really bad knees (needs to have them replaced, but trying to put it off as long as he can) and she said they save the first few rows for handicapped or disabled. But if they are not taken when we get to the airport, they may transfer us to those seats.

I just selected our seats for our trip in September and was able to group our entire party of 6 together in two rows. We always fly Airtran, as they have the only direct flights to Orlando out of Rochester. However, we have never been able to sit together as a family. It has always been me with our two DSs in a row of three, my husband rows away from us, and my parents rows away from all of us. It is great to know that we will all be together on our next flight. Of course my DH may not have as relaxing a flight as he has become accustomed to, as now he will have to help me with the kids. So much for his reading and naps

To start the summer season, AirTran Airways is introducing a great new feature.

Advance Exit Row Seating

We know you sometimes like a little extra room when you fly. That’s why we're now offering exit row seats at the time of booking, so you don't have to wait until you arrive at the airport. An exit row seat gives you 8 more inches of legroom than a standard coach seat.

Convenience

Our new seat assignment options make travel even easier.

When you book a Discount Coach or Sale fare, you can now select your seat assignments, including exit row seats, at the time of booking for $5 per passenger for standard coach seats and $15 per passenger for exit row seats (per one-way trip).

With this new feature, you can opt for extra leg room in the exit row, make sure you get the aisle or window seat of your choice, or ensure your party all sit together. Business Class and Y, B, and M coach fares will continue to offer free regular seat selection during the booking process.

Already Booked?

If you have an existing reservation booked through AirTran.com or 1-800-AIR-TRAN, visit AirTran.com now to select an exit row seat. If you did not book your ticket directly through AirTran, call 1-800-AIR-TRAN to make your exit row seat selection.

As always, you can still opt to select your seats upon check-in for no fee. Check in online to select your seats up to 24 hours before your flight's scheduled departure.

Sorry if this is a silly question, but do they board those who reserved their seats first? Sort of seems as though they'd have to, but I thought I would ask just incase -- after a nightmare Southwest flight I am really antsy about seats now. (We always have flown Delta, but their fares are astronomical compared to others now, so we went with Southwest for our last trip, and though we had our passes printed off 24 hours beforehand, and had "A" boarding passes, we still ended up 3/4 of the way back on the plane after all of the seemingly endless preboarders filed on -- I want to avoid that scenerio like the plague lol)

Airtran has assigned seats, but before this new $5.00 pick your seat deal, you couldn't get your seat assignment until 24 hours before your flight. You can still choose to do this, too at no extra charge. Either check in online to choose your seat or at the airport. So it's not quite like Southwest - and I'd think they'd board as usual.
