Hey guys....I live in a big neighborhood in South Forsyth about a mile from Johns Creek, but work in downtown Alpharetta.

(For a small accounting business.)
Alpharetta is great, we moved from there to here. My area is nice, so is Johns Creek. But all can be a bit of a drive from Lawrenceville, depending on where in Lawrenceville you are. From my area (I'm West and a little North of Lawrenceville) the distance isn't bad, but the traffic can be. If you get into Alpharetta proper you are quite a bit West of Lawrenceville. I know quite a few people in the Suwanee area that love it, that is just a bit North of you.
My advice is to figure out what kind of area you want, range of home prices, etc. Find a realtor that understands what you are looking for and the type of community you are seeking.
I don't know your family situation, but if schools are a big consideration put that at the top of your list. Also, if you are interested in recreation for your family you may want to look for some of the large communities that offer that in the neighborhood, builds a sense of community. A big thing in Atlanta is for neighborhoods to form their own kids swim teams. There are also neighborhood tennis leagues, for children, adults, and seniors. If those things appeal to you, look for a neighborhood large enough to support it. (Many people take up tennis after moving to Atlanta!) Many communities will also offer swim/tennis for the neighbors, but not be large enough to support leagues.
Good luck! And welcome to Atlanta!
