DVC Waitlist Alternates

So we are going in January... first week ... Marathon week... At the Beach Club ( so yeah, epcot area )

We actually have most of ours days booked but have a few days in the MIDDLE ( marathon weekend ) that were filled up. Now I've got them waitlisted ( yeah, good luck with that ) but I had a question about that.

Come JUNE we'll be able to book an alternate resort ( assuming there is still room of course ), and considering our large gang, we may even have to pay for some "overflow" points ( we'll be short like 10 points). Now if I book, let's say, AKV, for those few days, and leave my waitlists in place, can I have them automatically SWITCH if they become available? Or will the waitlist just go "welp, you don't have any points left, so tough. " ? I'm assuming/hoping as long as the names on the reservations are the same, we can get that changed...
Or will I need to verify constantly up until the vacation if there are any openings and call them in to switch the resort hoping it stays open.


P.S. How slim do you think my chances are on that waitlist?

There is an option when you set up the waitlist to have it switch with an existing. Since you would have set it up without that you would have to call MS to have them note that on the waitlist to switch out from the reservation you hope to book at 7 months. I'm not certain if that would mean they have to redo the waitlist thus moving it down the line but for something like this I don't think that's required.

Are talking about needing One Time Use Points? I looked up OTUPs and it says -

One-time-use vacation points are not available for waitlist reservations.

Well I would have already gotten them because I am going to make alternate reservations first. And then waitlist for the resort I want. I think that's a loophole there.
