Just wanted to chime in on this thread. We own both Starwood and DVC. Both are great programs.
The converting of Staroptions can only be converted everyother year, but can be stored for six years.
There are two Starwood properties in Orlando, Vistana Resort and Vistana Villages. Vistana Resort is older and not part of SVN, works like a regular timeshare. Vistana Village is new and is a mandatory resort.
I bought DVC cause I like staying in Disney. I do use my starpoints for stays at Swan and Dolphin. Since I am a Starwood owner, if I book four nights, my fifth night is free. There are no blackouts for using the points. First come, first serve.
Mission Hills is not part of SVN. Do not buy there, unless you want to stay there.
If you love Disney and want to visit every 18 months and want to be in Disney, then DVC sounds like it might work for you. However, if you don't mind staying at Vistana Village or Vistana Resort, I would buy another Starwood timeshare.
Vistana Village does offer incentives for sitting through the 90 minute (3 hour) presentation.
Let me know if you have any specific questions for comparing the two programs.
