Without addressing the question of availability of a GV at that time, I'd offer a couple of suggestions.
First, how well do you all know each other? Living in the same GV is being a lot closer than three separate rooms. If you have traveled together before, this shouldn't be a problem.
Second, GV's have some great facilities that you won't get in individual hotel rooms such as a full kitchen and washer/dryer. Plus room to strech out.
Third, you mentioned AKL. Well, that place is so unique -- and IMHO should be experienced at least once by everybody -- that your group would probably really enjoy it there.
Tough choice.
