81,000!!! WOW!!!
So my next question is how big is the "average" Starwood contract and does it replenish points every year?
Your Staroptions renew every year. Starwood is a hybrid system, its both a week system and a point system. So when you buy into Starwood, you are buying a week at a resort, during a set season. The week you bought also has a set Staroption value (points) that can be used at the 8 month mark for booking rooms.
Here is a simplified breakdown of how ownership works if you own a week at a resort. I will use Westin Kierland, since that is one of the resorts I own.
12-8 month window I can reserve at my home resort in the season that I own. This is just a straight exchange, no Staroptions involved.
8 month window I can use my Staroptions and try to book a room in another season at my home resort, or use my Staroptions to book a room at another Starwood resort, like Harborside. Now my Kierland unit is worth 148,100 Staroptions. I can use all of the Staroptions or just some of the Staroptions. I could call and try to reserve a two bedroom at Harborside in June, if successful it would cost me 81,000 Staroptions. I could then use the other 67,100 Staroptions for a week in two bedroom at Vistana Villages in the fall. These stays on Staroptions are for weekly stays minimum.
90 days out from check-in, you can use your Staroptions for daily stays. Each Starwood resort the units also have Staroption values for each stay. So, if I was staying at
DVC and wanted to save my points on weekends, I could add Fri and Sat at Vistana Village or Vistana Resort with my Staroptions.
There are alot of other "little" details, but this is a good basic overview of how the system works.
