Has anyone purchased the DVC travel insurance. We are going in October and using 166 points. It will be $41 for the insurance. If we have to cancel within the 30 day window or even mid trip, it will pay us $5 per point.

We are seriously considering it because we have 2 illnesses in close family. Here's the catch though....if we purchase the insurance and cancel within 30 daysof the reservation, we dont have the option to rebook, we automatically lose the points and the insurance pays us the $830 for the 166 points. Without the insurance, I could at least rebook or rent those points for $10/each.

I'm just concerned about something happening during our vacation. I asked MS if they ever made cancellation exceptions for family emergencies and he basically told me, "you need the insurance". That's fine too, I completely understand or they would be making exceptions for everyone's version of a family emergency.

What are your thoughts on the insurance? have you used it?

It sounds like it would be a better deal to just rent the points if that happens. $10 per point is better than $5.

If you would have to cancel within 30 days, could you opt not to file a claim on the insurance? The insurance is through Travel Guard, not DVC, so you have to actually file a claim with them to get reimbursed. You could choose not to get reimbursed and keep the points.

All I can say is we had a very positive experience with Travel Guard when we needed to file a claim. There was a mixup at first with the paperwork but all worked out to my surprise in the end. I will continue to use them.

We bought but did not need to use the insurance. I am a worry wart, so the cost of insurance was worth my being able to relax. If you have illnesses in the family, maybe you have enough to think about already and the insurance investment could ease your mind. I like DebbieB's idea to not file a claim if you want (and have time) to rent the points.

Remember that if you cancel a DVC resort vacation within 30 days of arrival, your points will go into a holding account.

According to the Travel Guard person I talked to, if I had to cancel within 30 days of check-in and had purchased the insurance, the insurance would supercede the DVC rules and it automatically puts a claim in. I asked her specifically if I would have the choice to rebook or if I would have to accept the $5 per point. That is why you can't purchase the insurance within the 30 days.

I'm not worried about the 30 days prior without insurance, I know I can rebook. However, I am concerned about if I am mid-vacation and something happens and I must return home. But, I can only purchase the insurance at the latest 31 days prior to check-in.

Aaagh, decisions!!!
