DVC tips for mousekeeping

We are usually in studios and usually leave after 7 or 8 nights but I usually try to remember to leave $2-3 on T & T day and then a little more at check-out. My thoughts are that it may be different staff on any given day so whoever comes on T & T may not be the same person on check-out. This trip we will be in a 1-bedroom and staying for 9 nights. So in this case do we get T & T on day 4 and a full cleaning on day 8 then they clean it again when we leave? That seems odd. Like we will have a clean unit for 1 day at the end? I don't think I will want to leave extra tip for BOTH of those full cleanings... What do ya'll do in that case??

No, you can call for extra toilet paper any time. Same with trash bags, paper towels, dishwasher detergent, dish detergent, vacuum cleaner bags. But not shampoo, shower gel, conditioner, laundry detergent, bath towels - unless you plan to pay for them.

I have been charged when I asked for more dishwasher detergent. It was like $1 per pack, and we got three ... only ended up using one so we used other two extras the next two years we went. I know other people have said they've gotten it without being charged. It might just be a matter of who answers the housekeeping phone when you call.

As others have said tipping is a personal decision.

Here is how I look at it.

Many travel and etiquette experts state that the etiquette for tipping housekeeping starts at $2-3 dollars per bed, per day and going up to $5 for higher end hotels. Adding more for any additional or personal service.

From what I have been told, the mousekeepers working the DVC rooms at places like BWV get the same hourly wages as those working the BWI rooms. Since etiquette says to tip for BWI I don't see how it would not apply in some way to BWV.

Personally for DVC, I translate "per day" into each day that service is provided.
So for stays of 3 days or less I consider it as 1 service.
4-7 days is 2 services.
8+ days 3+ services.
I also add $5-10 extra for each time the Kitchen is serviced.

How would you feel if you knew that they can't keep the tips or that they will have a pay decrease from $8-$10 to $2 to $4 with their next contract when Disney gets upset because a non-tipped position is accepting tips?

The guy cleaning the toilets in the parks gets paid minimum wage and doesn't get tipped and those toilets are a lot worse than any resort bathroom. Doesn't seem fair.

Although they are not required, Members may feel free to leave
housekeeping tips as a form of recognizing their gratitude for the
service provided. Housekeepers are able to accept any tip that is marked
for Housekeeping. Members may, also, leave any unopened foods that they
do not wish to take with them for housekeepers as well.

I base my personal decisions about tipping on the reality of the situation. When I receive good housekeeping service, I tip. When I receive bad service, I do not. In over 15 years of DVC stays, I have never NOT left a tip.

I wish with the mousekeeping it was more flexible. For example we typically stay for a fortnight. So it would be nice if they said for 14 nights you get x t & t and x full clean but it's up to you when you have them. You tell them when you check in. Sometimes when we have done odd number of nights we have had full cleans a bit too late or early! I know you can pay for extra but the amount seems right just sometimes not the day they do it! But maybe it would be an admin nightmare for them!

OP, as you can see there are wide swings of opinion regarding tipping mousekeepers. So that means you will be fine doing whatever feels right to you. I am one who tips for trash and towel and at checkout. I have a special place in my heart for these women (I have never seen a male housekeeper) who get my room ready for me and $8.70/hour is not much of a wage. They always seem so very grateful to be acknowledged. I also contact Member Satisfaction when we receive particularly good service. Doing so is good for the mousekeeper and good for all of us because it helps to retain quality employees. Just my 2¢.

I agree totally with you. We always tip for T&T, and leave a tip at the end of our stay. We have seen a male housekeepers at BWV though and he was so nice. We have also never had a problem with the condition of our room or T&T or full cleaning. I also leave the towels in the tub and tie up the garbarge bags.

I always tip for T & T and check out day.

We were due for T & T on Wed. and when no one came by 2pm I called. Housekeeping came within 5 mins.

She seemed a bit rushed. We talked in general while she changed towels and trash bags. (not about her job or tipping) She almost forgot to clock-out from my room. I picked up the $5 tip I had left for het at the table and handed it to her. She was very appreciative and said thank you very much. She showed me her list of rooms she had cleaned and that I was the last room for the day and the only one who left a tip (she had about 10 rooms on the list) and kept repeating thank you very much. I know she appreciated it.

It is a personal decision. I do appreciate what they do even though they are paid and it is not a tipped position. A few dollars makes us both feel better so I have no problem with that. I am happy at the end of the day.

You have to realize that etiquette sites and other experts can only give you one opinion. Roughly half of the hotel housekeepers in the US are actually in tipped positions and half are not from the info I've seen. Therefore for hotels I actually find out if they are or not and tip or not tip accordingly. None are in tipped positions for timeshares in the US that I am aware of. People throw around the pay level but unless they are going to consistently tip those who serve them in that general pay level, I find that reference hypocritical.

I understand and it is your personal decision, what you do is your business. The concept of tipping has lost it's purpose IMO.

I also find it interesting that so many people never have any issues with their rooms. Guess that our family is just unlucky.

Don't know why this happened but October 2011 while staying in 2br at BLT we got full cleaning everyday which included making the beds for free. I even checked my bill at check out. They did an excellent job. We left 5 dollars per day. Has anyone ever had this happen. Any other time it was the typical T&T and we never had a problem.

Maybe they thought you were paying hotel rates not using points by mistake?

I never call for those extra supplies. If you just go in the hallway and ask any housekeeper you find nearby, they'll give you one or two extras of whatever you need. I've never had one turn me down. (Of course, I'm not asking for two of everything. Usually just a laundry detergent and a dishwasher detergent.)

I find when you phone for something for example they didn't leave us enough toilet tissue one time they bring it so quickly and so much of it! I don't know how they get there so quick I just put down the phone lol.
