I think the only ones that are safe at making a business out of going to Disney Parks are YouTubers and social media influencers. They provide free advertising, BUT they also have to stay in that realm. The YouTubers that had lived a year at WDW and have so many room tours on their channel were also caught up in that great tour guide massacre because they started a side business doing tours... went to court to get their trespassing lifted but failed.

I was on today at 8:12 am. Every WDW resort had availability to book rooms. Only one resort was booked for studios.

Now, some of the lower cost views were gone.

And, thst aligns with the first serve nature of the contract.

DVC should find a way to stop bots being used.

I just want to point out that the notion that anyone is being completely shut out of booking their WDW at 11 months is simply not true.

Do those who are commercially renting book high demand rooms? Yes.

Are they they only ones booking those rooms? No

So, stopping commercial renters may help increase a chance but is it going to be meaningful enough that every owner who wants a BW resort view studio will get it now without an issue?

I am still of the belief that regardless of what rooms a commercial renter is taking, the enforcement should be the same if that owner has indeed demonstrated they are violating that aspect of the contract.

I agree no resorts are fully sold out a 11 months.
A specific room type - sure, but the entire resort? No way.

So why hasn't this been done? Any ideas? I gave up complaining of bots a while back because it seemed nobody took it serious.

Any change to the booking engine has to be carefully considered. In the past few months it appears they've started requiring me to log in more frequently, especially when accessing the booking engine. Just in the past few days they added the "personal use" check box at the end of the booking engine that sparked this thread.

That might have been true in the early days of bots. Now bots are evolving just like AI and captcha will only give you false hope

I'm not sure how sophisticated the bots that DVC rental brokers use are, but if Disney locks down on commercial renting a captcha wouldn't be necessary because the brokers using bots would no longer need them.

I agree no resorts are fully sold out a 11 months.
A specific room type - sure, but the entire resort? No way.

And that is reason I at least want that point to be clear because potential buyers should not be made to believe that 11 month bookings are impossible.

I’m hoping DVCs move is doing what is right for membership and not clamping down to ridiculous levels where people with 300 points can’t rent half etc. I continue to say they are horribly conflicted.

My feeling is, if you are taking 150 points worth of vacations, buy 150 points. Don't buy 300 with the intent to rent out half of them every single year. That's not how the membership is intended to function.

Now, if you buy that 150 and find yourself needing to rent every now and then, no biggy.

I liked their videos, had no idea they were doing paid tours. Disney doesn't like people making money on their property except for them. It is what it is. People as plugged in to the Disneysphere as they seemed to be should have known it was a matter of time. Sad.

Right but if you buy just enough points to stay in the cheapest studio at your resort in September and no more, you will be perpetually frustrated with DVC.

My feeling is, if you are taking 150 points worth of vacations, buy 150 points. Don't buy 300 with the intent to rent out half of them every single year. That's not how the membership is intended to function.

Now, if you buy that 150 and find yourself needing to rent every now and then, no biggy.

But I’m sure a lot of people’s circumstances change, even temporarily for say 5-10 years. So you are advocating they must then sell their points? How is this affecting the membership or you in any way? ‘That’s not how the membership is intended to function’? On what basis do you make that assertion given the non definition of ‘commercial’ renting, the statement on the website that owners can rent, and the 2007 POS that said only when you make 20 bookings a year can they make enquiry and ask you to prove it is ‘non commercial’.
I can’t see anywhere that the hypothetical scenario is legally ‘not how the membership is intended to function.’

Of course, and most will caution potential buyers not to buy for those high demand rooms.

But implying that commercial renters are causing owners to be locked out of home resorts is simply not accurate.

They impact the system. But so does the average owner who rents reservations on their membership within the acceptable limits.

It’s part of what we buy. As I said, DVC should enforce the contract when it comes to those who clearly have bought a ton of points for the main purpose of renting.

But all availability issues are not the fault of renting.

Lots of smaller contract owners now. Lots of owners buying for studios only. Lowering of point minimums.

Honestly, If certain rooms are that difficult, those resort owner should ask DVC to implement the special seasons booking rule that exists.

That would completely prevent commercial renters to hoard those low point rooms.

These are my opinions.

If you want to rent half your points out every year, have at it. But if that's not "regular", I don't know what is. I'd be pretty worried about it if that were my MO. As I said, if you think you are using your membership outside of its intended use, you probably are.

Well well well, how the turntables have turned. So interesting to see a bunch of new names (or old dormant ones) crawl out of the woodwork to sway public opinion with tales about indigent grandmothers who need to rent thousands of points for “a few years” to save their great great grandpappy’s farm home from repossession.

I told myself I’d do a mountain climber for every time someone said “clamping down on rentals won’t affect room availability” and now my arms are so weak I can barely type. Just waiting for the “well a 2BR theme park view is available at 11 months, nobody promised you a room type” to start and maybe I’ll finally be able to button my college jeans again.

I imagine things will move swiftly from here on out, but Redweek has trended up in rental listings since the announcement, not down, so fear doesn’t seem to be a rapid motivator.

If you looked at the deep discounts Disney is giving on rooms (2026 is free kids dining and 40% off a villa during spring break?), this was inevitable and likely won’t be pleasant for the offenders. Nobody steals from the mouse.

That’s why it’s suggested to buy a FW if you don’t have flexibility.

If you are regularly renting half your points, why is it ridiculous for DVC to stop that?

Membership is for personal use. Renting for 10 years isn’t personal use.
