You know how people say they pair you up on the cruise with people of like interests at dinner . Well we got paired up with a young couple our age and the grandparents . They were very nice people . I had taken the DVC tour before this cruise as I wanted to have the money spent on the cruise go towards the purchase price . I didn't purchase at that time . So disney knew I was interested in buying DVC .

Well these people that we sat with at dinner they always had some sort of DVC apparel on a hat a lanyard ect , at least 2-3 of them had dvc stuff to wear .Obviously I was interested in DVC I started the conversation about it . It was kind of our main topic at dinner LOL . They were on the trip on points they all bought more points while they were there , they must have given me a few of those referral cards within 3 days, when I actually bought . They had a stack of referral cards in there lanyards . I mean they were die hards telling us about there next trips members cruise they are going on ect .

Now my wife always thought they were put there at our table to sell us DVC , and I was like thats crazy . But lately i been thinking about it and thinking it could actually have been set up . IDK probably sound crazy now (some of you think I always sound crazy ;)LOL) . Just wondering your thoughts .

I'm sure they were just trying for the incentive offered to DVC members for referring a new member. I love talking about DVC and provide free advertising to anyone that is curious about it! :)

When you go on a cruise as a DVC member, whether or not you use points, one day you get something in your room to give to the DVC sellers and they give you a box with lanyards and DVC referral cards. Throughout the cruise as members you can get lots of freebies like caps, bracelets that glow, pictures of Walt, etc. On the cruise I was on recently, at the presentations the DVC people did mention that if you wore the caps, looked like you were having a good time, you could talk DVC up, give a referral card to someone and get pins if you showed up at the stand together.

Some members take it all to heart and I suppose they could be natural salespeople. I do not think that the people who were at your table were paid salespeople. I think they were most likely DVC members who were looking to make some money by referring you to DVC.

I was on a long cruise, 14 night transatlantic, and I did see a fair number of members talking to other guests. However, I also heard more members talking to the non members about buying resale!

You guys are probably right . They did tell me to get my free stuff everyday and I did . LOL I tried asking for the free stuff at my first stay at a DVC resort and they told me they don't do that on land LOL.

My resent trip I feel I didn't see many DVC members , at least with apparel . When I was on the cruise I felt like I was the only one that didn't have DVC apparel .

I would do the same thing if someone asked I love talking about it . I cant wait to get on another cruise . If they sail out of NYC again , that will make the decision for me .

I think nearly everyone I talked to left me knowing that I belonged to DVC. I enjoy cruising, and I enjoy DVC, two of my loves!

:lmao:

I actually wonder if people really hand out those referral cards to strangers.
I personally don't have the guts to do it.
Although I talk about it to people if they do ask. :)

Lol. I'm a Dvc member and I love talking disney. I did this before coming a member but I think I do it more since then

Yeah, I can't imagine ever handing out a referral card too. We just got a large batch in the mail and they went right in the recycle bin. I'll be the first to say how great everything is, but I would feel extra sorts of awkward handing out a referral card. I feel like it would almost tarnish anything good I just said because maybe I said it just to get some kind of referral bonus.

Sent from my phone using DISBoards Ap, please excuse any typos and autocorrect mistakes.

In the early days when we had pixie dust in our eyes we were excited about owning DVC and we would refer new buyers even though we don't qualify for a monetary reward. After several years with all of the changes and dealing with DVD/DVC we learned that DVC is a business, not a club.

DVC can save some people money but I'm not going to be the one talking strangers into buying a very expensive product that commits them to very expensive vacations for years to come.

I can't prostitute myself for referrals, I'd rather be able to keep a more distant relationship and avoid the situation where I might influence someone for the wrong reasons or just to come across as such. The only referrals I've gotten were those that rented and ended up buying but I've never sent in a prospect to DVC even rentals. I've done it once or twice with Marriott for freebies knowing the names I gave them were already on their list but I wasn't comfortable with it so I no longer consider doing that.

I can't remember ever getting referral cards (likely because we lived in CO that had strict timeshare sale laws). However if I did, I may keep a couple in the drawer. Frequently, new members will receive an additional discount if they have a referral from an existing member. If someone I knew wanted to buy in for some reason and they asked me for a referral for a discount, then I'd be happy to sponsor them.

I likely wouldn't sponsor a stranger, nor would I go out of my way to sell someone on DVC.
