Dvc smokers, please

As a smoker one of my biggest concerns is not being able to get a smoking room at a DVC resort. I personally would not smoke in a non-smoking room, and would actually probably feel very uncomfortable smoking on the balcony of a non-smoking room out of respect for the non-smokers in nearby rooms/on nearby balconies. Smoking is our only request.

When we requested smoking, it was made clear that this was a "request" and was not a guarantee. When you reserve rooms through CRO - cash ressie - they will guarantee smoking. Is this handled the same way when a reservation is made at a DVC resort through CRO?

Thats what the people thought in California to before smoking was banned everywhere(Public bulidings, work places, resraunts, bars, etc).;)

But, not Disneyland. :)

I would not smoke in a non smoking unit, but, would have no problems smoking on the balcony, as long as that is allowed.
Not a problem for me, cause I always get a smoking unit, except once, and was told to smoke in it anyway, which I did not do.

expert(Gail) would respond. Gail, we appreciate you and other DVC members that are considerate and don't smoke in non-smoking units. But as you can see from other posters(Candlelady)......that is not always the case.:(

Nick,
I don't think she was being inconsiderate, she was just doing what was allowed at that time and place and I cannot fault her for that. I have (except for that one time) yet to not have a smoking optional unit. But, there again, I only go at slower times and I am not sure what would happen if I was nuts enough to go at a "peak" time. Probably resign myself to smoking outside, definitely NOT inside. I personally detest the smell of stale smoke (or whatever it is) and I know that many are sensative to the after effects of smoke so, why ever would I do anything to cause an unpleasant stay for another member (or anyone for that matter)? I am not wired that way. I spend a lot of time cleaning my house to keep it smelling nice, I don't smoke in the bedroom, mainly the office and living room. I cannot stand the smell of smoke on my clothes, hair or person, so, I wash a lot. LOL. I have stayed in hotels, in a smoking room, where it literally reeked and I could not sleep because of the awful smell. I can only imagine what it would be like for a non smoker. UGH. I can say that I have yet to encounter anything close to that at OKW or Vero, they must clean better or something. As an aside, I am most happy they stopped with that nasty room spray they used to use, that really caused a problem with me.
I guess I am a non smoker in a smoker's body. ;)

I think that DVC will never go completely non-smoking. Maybe they will make all rooms non-smoking. But I think that they will always allow people to smoke on their balconies. That's how they handle it on both the Magic and Wonder. All cabins are non-smoking, but guests are allowed to smoke on all verandahs and in designated locations on the ship. I know that I would much rather have a person smoking on the balcony of a non-smoking room than inside the room.

Just another smoking question

In case we are put in a non-smoking room - where at VWL and WL can one go to sit and relax and Smoke outside at the resort?

Thank You

Glenda,
If you find yourself in a non smoking room, it is permissable to smoke on the balcony or anywhere you want outside. Only the unit is non smoking, not the resort. :)

Thanks Gail

Do you know if there is an outdoor area at VWL as well that is designated smoking area -

Maybe out by one of the pools?

Thanks again

Yea...leave it to the left coast to ban consumption of a legal product but locally approve the use of federally banned substances. I guess you can eat brownies in public, but can't fire up a doobie. :)

I doubt DVC (or most hospitality industries) would go totally non-smoking unless forced to do so by some bit of feel good legislation.

Glenda, outside of the parks, just about any place that isn't near some type of fuel is 'smoking permitted'. Courtesy still applies, on both sides of the issue.

-Joe

The only outdoor places where smoking is restricted is in the parks.
I find it strange that people complain about smoking on balconies at resorts like BWV. The room next to yours might be non-smoking but the one below might be smoking.
Keep at it Nick! Maybe someday your dream of a smoke-free WDW will come true... (maybe the same day that magical pigs fly out of my butt). There's a huge difference between CA and FL and I'm not just talking geography. :)

Pretty much the entire outdoors. I would, however, look for non smoking signs. We have not encountered a problem smoking by a pool (which I think is totally unsafe btw, some people are stupid and will throw lit butt on the walkway setting the potential of burned feet, or sit poolside and flick ashes into the pool), or anywhere. Like Joe said, courtesy on BOTH sides should apply.
You will most probably be safe outside (except where posted or already mentioned). Hopefully you will get a smoking unit and there will be no worries. :)

HorizonsFan,
We can only hope...........Whats the difference between CA people and Fl??
It looks like the CA people care about people's health and well being to do somthing about it..........and I am sure most states will follow eventually some day.;)

As usual, the original thread has drifted to a smoking discussion/debate when it began as a simple question asking for help getting a "smoking optional" room.

If you have suggestions about getting a smoking optional room, please feel free to comment. Other discussion about smoking is welcome on the Debate Board, but not on the DVC Board.

Thanks!

Thanks Again Gail

We haven't stayed at VWL or WL before and was just trying to get the "lay of the land" so to speak.

We are both very considerate smokers - always sticking to the smoking sections inside the parks etc.

Although its been said that you are allowed to smoke on the balconies of a non-smoking room - I think I'd feel realy guilty about doing so.

At AKL you could go up to the pool bar and ask for an ashtray and were allowed to smoke at the tables there by the pool bar.

Just one more question please - is there a specific floor where the smoking optional rooms are or area of the VWL. Our reservation from DVC says we have a 2BR dedicated and requested smoking optional is on the reservation (although that is not guaranteed)

We are so excited about this trip - being our first trip "home" and also being able to bring my 2 nephews (ages 11 & 14) on their First Trip to WDW. My 9yr old is already practicing playing tour guide - lol

Thanks Again

If the guilt is coming from comments by those on the boards, I would disregard them. As I mentioned earlier, there may be someone next door or underneath that is in a smoking room and smoking on the balcony. The only place I wouldn't smoke on the balcony is OKW, as they have non-smoking buildings.
If your guilt is self-imposed, more power to you!

Hi HorizonsFan

No guilt from other posters - just my own feelings - maybe more of I was doing someting wrong kind of thing.

Thanks again
