DVC should really consider...

Jeeeeze...... seems like the amount and strength of opposing views are going way overboard to the OP polite position of "Just a thought." We all know what we bought, it's just an idea. Perhaps we should lighten up a bit......Jeeeeze.

This option wouldn't work for me but it would be a great idea for families with children. Especially if there is a boy and a girl who won't sleep on a roll-out together. I have friends who just suggested this same thing at another resort in NH. They received a letter back stating they had never thought of this option and may ask other guests if this would be a viable sleeping arrangement. Annmarie

I don't think anyone means any offense but when opinions are asked people do respond with their opinions and objections/agreements.

I don't think that DVC can doe this in an existing resort because the original prospectus states what the configurations are in each type unit. That is why @BCV when they ordered the wrong bed set up they had to order more beds for some of the two bedrooms and store some of the sofa beds.

What if a new resort were built with a section that was specific for families? Just for example it would have 2 queen beds in the MBR, or bunk beds in the studio.

When booking, people would need to specify that they wanted to stay in the 'family' section, or the regular section.

Then DVC could book it, like they book a prefered view or std view at BWV. I don't know how the points would be structured, but as long as people knew when they booked which section they would be in, that would be fine with me.

I, for one (and my husband 2) really like the king in the mbr, but I can understand why families would get better use out of a scenario with a family section.

On the plus side, maybe all the kiddos would be in one section

This could be an idea for future DVC properties though, but not for us. We bought because we LIKE not having an extra bed in the studios (one of the reasons we were swayed away from OKW).

I think Debby7 hit the nail on the head as to why this can't be done in an existing resort. Florida has some pretty strict timeshare laws (for which I am thankful) and the 'look' can't be changed from what was originally sold.

At an annual meeting we attended, someone asked about adding screening to the balconies (due to West Nile), and the response was basically 'We have to keep it as sold'. I can imagine some 'other' developer coming up with some pretty interesting 'bait & switch' timeshare units.

You always have the option of using your points to book a room at the AKL and request bunkbeds there.

They can't legally change the rooms once the propspectus' have "governmental" approval.

To me bunk bed rooms look like dorms, not deluxe hotel rooms.

The one place I can see these being workable would be in the grand villas--not anything existing, but for a new property (and it's too late for SSR).

I was shocked to discover Disney offered bunkbeds at all. Children under the age of six aren't supposed to use them for safety reasons. My sister fell off one as a child (about six or seven years old) and broke her arm. She was horsing around, but still - it wouldn't be a risk I'd want on vacation.

Mine are too little to care (sleeping in the same bed is exciting for them) and will do the pullout. They are also too little for bunkbeds (four and five). Eventually, it will be a two bedroom so they have seperate beds.

I can see the idea and it would have worked for us in the past. The trouble with DVC is that any variation will add dramatically to the difficulty and confussion for MS and the members. Just look at the BW view discussion as of late. It will never happen but makes more sense than the 2 beds in the Master or 1 BR sleep 6 options.

OH MY! I can't even begin to imagine the booking nightmare for MS nor the check-in nightmare if all these room variations were to be available!

Everyone knew what they were getting when they bought. It either works for them or it doesn't.

We have a DD and DS who are now both teens. In the 10 years we've owned DVC, the four of us together have stayed in a studio a grand total of ONE NIGHT. We stayed in a 1 BR for four or five nights and the only reason for that is that we booked last-minute and that was all that was available. A 2BR is what we need so that the kids each have their own bed (and I can sleep with my DH instead of my DD ); we bought our points and plan our vacations accordingly.

The bunk beds at AKL have a rail built all the way around the bed so it is very hard for you to fall off the top bunk. We had a room with a bunk bed at AKL on the 5th floor in June.

Well, I agree with the majority of the other posters here. NO bunkbeds!! We bought into DVC knowing the configuration. It happens to work for my family, and I think that bunkbeds are very limiting. How many adults would want to sleep in a bunkbed? How many parents of young children would prefer a bunkbed? My kids (soon to be two and four years old) are much safer in a pullout ( or queen bed at OKW, our home resort) then they would be on bunk beds. When they get older, if there is a problem with them sleeping together, then we'll have to bring an air mattress, go up a room size or two, buy more points, etc... THey will only be interested in bunks for a few years at best, you know how quickly kids grow, and they'd out grow a bunk bed in eight years on the outside in my opinion, probably even sooner!

So, I agree, no bunkbeds, please!!!

Folks, this is a newbie who clearly stated that she was simply thinking out loud. We've all thought "what if......" about different aspects of DVC. Wishful thinking isn't against any rules that I've ever seen.

Please step back and think a moment before you submit your reply. Better yet, add your own "wishes".

As for me, no bunks but a nice cold pitcher of margaritas in the fridge would be a nice touch when we arrive.

So did the one my sister fell out of.

Bunk beds involve ladders. They make tempting jungle jims. I own one (currently set up as two twins until my kids get old enough to use them responsibly), so it isn't that I'm against them, just that I don't want to be hyperaware on vacation with toddlers or preschoolers.

When we stayed at Wilderness Lodge twice before buying into DVC, we requested and received bunk beds both times. They were a true blessing even though we have same-gender kids (girls)!! They absolutely cannot sleep in the same bed together, so the bunk bends were wonderful!

They alternated who got the top bunk each night.

But I wouldn't want to see DVC move to bunk beds in some units. I hate to say this, but that would just lead to more complaints and upset people. "I got stuck with the bunk bed room" or, "I made my reservation at 11 months and couldn't get the bunk beds!".

I think it is a novel idea, and worthy of the discussion. Welcome to the DIS boards, and I hope the reception to the idea you floated out there does not discourage you from coming to these boards and posting in the future.

And I was merely giving my resonse to that thought out loud. I think it's a terrible idea! Am I not allowed to feel that way? My point is that I'm sure there are tons of different configurations that DVC does not have that a few families here and there would LOVE because of their particular configuration. Yes, it would be great in an ideal world if every single family configuration could be accommodated in the best way for that family, but frankly, I like DVC the way it is and I wouldn't want to get "stuck" with one of these new room types that people keep proposing. I didn't tell the OP they were a big stinky poopoo head for even suggesting it, but they threw it out there as an idea and I happen to think it's a lousy idea... that's my opinion and I'm entitled to it.

I think bunk beds are a nice idea and could be very helpful to families. I've seen some configurations in other timeshares/condos where bunkbeds were build into the walls in a hallway in a very tasteful manner. Personally we're fine with the room configurations as they are, but your idea seems very reasonable, thank you for sharing it.

Sorry about some of the responses your getting. It's one thing to dissagree with an idea, it's another to be discourteous about it, I don't know why that's necessary on some poster's part. Please keep posting and don't let some of these posts discourage you.

Maybe I'm just plane naive here, but going on vacation and especially Disney is a treat. I can't believe kids can't deal with situations where they have to sleep with their siblings. I have a sister and we are three years apart. When we traveled, we slept in the same bed, if we didn't like it, there was always the floor. My parents would never split us up. Same with my cousins, boy and girl, they either learned to deal with each other, or hit the floor! These are siblings, have I missed something, they live in the same house, use the same bathroom, etc etc, can't they just get along and sleep with each other for a vacation?

I like the bunk bed idea -- especially at OKW where the rooms are larger. I understand that some didn't like it because they'd have to sit on the bed to watch TV -- we've been doing that for 10 years at OKW and never minded it at all! I think a few rooms with this option would be fantastic.

Another thought I never minded was Disney offering rollaways for situations like these -- families who don't want their son and daughter sharing a bed or two kids that just can't sleep in the same bed. As long as you're not over your limit of people staying in the room, I think a small rollaway would be perfect.
