DVC Resorts the ONLY resorts to open in 2020?

After listening to yesterday's WDW Discussion show, John said that it appears that the only resorts to open for ANY hotel guests will be DVC resorts and that guests booked in non DVC resorts are being given 3 options:

1) Cancel
2) Reschedule to 2021
3) Stay at the DVC resort that MS has assigned to you (at no extra cost). You can change DVC resorts for the cost difference in the event your don't like the assigned resort.

He initially said that these options were for non DVC reservations up until the parks reopen. He then elaborated that as far as they know, DVC resorts will be the only resorts open through the end of 2020.

That raises a lot of questions/opinions:

Does Disney have that many points to be able to take cash guests and book DVC rooms for them? If not, how can they legally do this?

Let's assume these guests will be put in studios. That is only going to compound the already overloaded point availability that has to be used in 2020. People who have to use '18 points by year end are now competing with hotel guests utilizing DVC rooms.

If they are hotel guests staying in DVC property, will they be getting daily house keeping? If so, are the members going to be on the hook for the added cost via dues increases?

I think this is being misunderstood because they are only letting people change to DVC or Ft Wilderness...at least in my opinion

The reason I am being told that is because those are the only resorts technically open. Allowing people to rebook at resorts still closed as of today, would imply that they would be open.

Since Disney has not come out and given opening dates, I think they are not allowing rebooking so people don’t use that as a confirmation.

Now, I do think we may see values and moderates closed longer, but it doesn’t make any sense for Disney not to open up the deluxe hotel rooms attached to DVC complexes when those things are running..even if limited.

They will only be able to move points rooms to cash at 60 days. Right now they are dealing with people before July 5.

I saw one post where someone got moved to a grand villa at SSR with only 2 people.

They are offering light housekeeping to hotel guests - towels and trash pickup every other day.

This makes no sense what so ever. I believe I read of a family of 4 being bumped up to one as well from a value family suite. Man I wish they'd move our family of 5 (oldest can't go) from a one bedroom DVC to a 2 or 3 bedroom for free. Oh well. At least I have ressies

I agree! What they should do is upgrade a DVC member (perhaps a family of 4 or 5) from a studio to a grand villa, then let that regular cash guest get the studio. It seems that they NEVER (or at least hardly ever) upgrade DVC members.

My bet is they see future points sales by upgrading cash guests.

One thing I would like to know - there is a cap on breakage income. So is there a financial advantage using DVC rooms.

Not sure how many people who go to value resorts are viable DVC candidates. I would think it would be more the people who frequent moderates or deluxe resorts more. I could be wrong though but I know my sister is a value resort user and she thinks it's ridiculous to spend any extra money on a room when you just sleep there. If she got an upgrade she would be excited but would enjoy it for what it was.....a free upgrade. My husband and I had always been moderate users. I was willing to pay for the better rooms/theming/dining options/etc. DVC was right up our alley and I can't believe it took so long for us to jump in.

In 1999, I had a member friend who I thought was nuts to spend all that money on DVC. She invited me to go with her on a long weekend meet up for a DVC chat room. We stayed in an OKW 2 bedroom with 2 other members. Six months later I bought BWV. Plus we are still friends with most of the women from that meet up, 21 years later!

Before that were you a value resort user? That's the key....convincing someone who doesn't want to spend more than $150 a night into spending almost $30,000 for approximately 150 points (which you would need for a week at many of the resorts) From a marketing perspective, the moderate users are your bread/butter to entice.

Any additional income over breakage cap Disney keeps. And, from the way I read the POS, they can pull rooms farther out than 60 days by anticipating member demand,

The key with these moves is guests are not given a choice and these are only for prior to July 5th. This example is why so they don’t get complaints that X got moved here so I want Y.

In Aug/Sept 2006-2007, they used to upgrade a lot from values during oversold free dining to SSR and OKW. And I recall that they had a staffed DVC booth at POP when they didn't have any at the mods. You'd think it'd be moderates, but I'm sure some MBA marketing person had a plan.

My wife has been to Disney 4 times staying at value, when she finally convinced me to go we stayed at a value. I told her I would only come back if we stay at a resort, DVC was purchased at Poly, bought in 2018. This summer would have been my second trip, but moved to December. We plan on going every year or so, taking grands when we go. So I guess I’m the value who bought in but that’s because when I go I want a vacation.

I'm wondering if putting everyone into DVC rooms de facto limits park capacity.

In May we downsized our August trip so freed up a RIV studio and a ded 2BR at VGF. Lesson learned, also, that it's easier to downsize from a 2br LO to a 1br at the same resort....

To add on to this question.....

If this is in fact the case, how much liability do we as owners take on with all these extra reservations? What if someone contracts Covid -19 at the resort? Will Disney Management try to push off the responsibilities of any lawsuits to us as members?

Are we legally on the hook for this? Or would we only be partially responsible? I have heard it said that Disney is self insured. Do we know what our coverage as members look like post Covid?

Also, how does this affect our annual fees? I know we are supposed to share in the cost, but let’s be real, I’m sure we are billed a lot more than Disney pays out and we get less service!

We aren’t limited to occupancy but how will this affect our ability to social distance if they pack our resorts?

We were value only pre-DVC...but we were going once or twice a year. At some point you decide, you know what this food court and larger than life theme is getting a bit old without kids. Or I want to see animals from my studio and dog gone it, I deserve it....then you grab your pitcher of Kool-aid and a large rose colored glass.
