DVC renting out points ???? Please help me understand this

I have know idea how to rent points from a DVC member, but have heard about it..
Is this supposed to be a good deal????
Anyone that can give me alittle info on this would help me out so much!

Head on over to the Vacation Club board. They do it all the time and will be able to help you in great detail.

Usually you will determine the # of points needed for your stay, put out a request and wait for the replys.

Points go in the range of $10.00 a point and you would pay the DVC member directly. They make the ressie in your name at the resort that you want.

It does require trust on both parts, but can be a great deal.

Thanks so much for the quick replies.. I looked over the board rather quickly but I do not see any deals....
Seems like I would be paying more than if I just made a ressie straight with WDW.
I guess I will just try to get a good AP rate and keep my fingers crossed till I see the code..

Don't give up on this yet! We rented points for our trip last year and are renting from the same person for part of our upcoming trip. We are renting points for a 2 bedroom at OKW. 96 points are needed for the 4 nights (weeknights) at 10.00 a point. Total 960.00 no tax.

The same reservation paying rack rate would be 560.00 a night.
2240.00 + (11% tax) 246.40 for a total of 2486.40. A savings of 1526.40.

I have quite figured out the % but over 50%. I have an AP and even if they have what I want available for the discount, I can't imagine it could be anymore than this.

Do some more research, renting points on the weekends costs way more...ask questions etc.... This worked perfect for our family.

It really depends on when you are going, where you want to stay, if you are going to be there a Friday and Saturday and if Disney is offering any discounts on the DVC resorts.

Renting points can be a savings over rack rates during the week, Sunday-Thursday, however weekend points are double or more so that pushes the price up.

You really just have to set down and compare the cost.

As stated there is an element of trust necessary and Disney will not involve themselves if there is a problem.

I think you won't find a savings if you want to stay at a non-DVC resort. However, it definitely seems to me that when you stay at one of the DVC resorts, you can save a lot by renting points. As an example, 7 nights during September in a VWL studio is $2177 (I checked the WDW site so this is rack rate). The DVC point calculator shows the same studio for the same time period would be 104 points. If you bought the points for the standard $10 per point price I've seen on this board, you'd be saving $1000 or more (estimate because I don't know where take figures into DVC points).

Of course, you'd need to calculate this for the dates of your trip as weekends, as indicated by other posters, are much higher for points than weekdays while the rack rate doesn't change based on day of the week (I assume?).

Do you homework. You might be presently surprised. I was looking to rent some points for my trip next year and ended up buying into DVC.
However, IMO renting DVC points only makes financial sense if you are used to staying at moderate/deluxe resorts onsite. It will not make any sense to you if you are comparing DVC to either budget resort onsite or to an offsite property.

I have been up reading last night and All today about it and it does so good... I am so scared I would be the one to get ripped off.. I will let my husband read all about it and if he yes then I will start looking for someone to rent points from...
I am not going till May , do you think it is too early to start looking and asking people about renting points for that time??

I'm late to this thread, but I just wanted to say that renting DVC points was a fantastic experience for me. It's not cheaper than staying offsite, but you can get a better-than-deluxe room for moderate rates.

Even though you're not going until May, it can't hurt to put out a request right now. If you don't get a reply, just wait a month and try again.

Also, the trust factor can be a little scary, especially since there really isn't a feedback system like on eBay. As a rule of thumb, though, if you rent from someone who is a long-time member on these boards, you almost certainly can't go wrong. Still, if money is so tight that your entire vacation would be destroyed by a deal gone wrong, this may not be the way to go.

Also consider the possibility of staying offsite for the first night if you arrive on a Saturday, it will save you tons of money.

The savings can be tremendous if you work it right. You can get a studio at a deluxe DVC unit for in the range or less than a moderate. Of course you can also pay more if you make other choices. As a rule DVC is the best value avoiding weekends and will likely never be a good idea for mostly just a weekend. Don't forget there is no room tax compared to around 13% on regular stays. Plus you might get some of the member discounts/benefits even if technically renters aren't supposed to get them. My advice is to look at your options and decide what's best for you and your situation. I think the risk is minimal and controllable if you do your homework. If you can get a DVC studio at break even compared to a moderate with tax, it's worth the minor risks involved.
