DVC Rentals - what is it?

I don't think we'd buy the DDP. If it is offered for free on a room that seems to be a reasonable rate to us that is the only way we would get it. We have never paid for it before.

Yes, math is my favorite subject - no, not really! ;)

Oh, if I were you I would SO be looking for a free dining deal, even paying rack rates. :)

Hope they offer one this year so you can take advantage of it!

We won't be going until next fall at the earliest but I will definitely pay attention to the deals that are offered for this year!

I just rented points for the first time and will likely never make a standard reservation again! It was about the same as a moderate resort would cost us, but we'll be at a deluxe resort in a larger room. The only negatives are the lack of daily housekeeping and not eligible for free dining, but the pros outweigh the cons IMO.

Thank you for the responses to my questions. About the dining---my husband said look they have a kitchen you can cook. I looked at him like he lost his mind. I said I dont even like to cook at home much less on vacation!!

I was thinking of something else. We have a reservation already with Disney. I was thinking of cancelling just the room portion so I could rent from a DVC rental. Have you ever heard of anyone doing that?

Yes, you can cancel your cash reservation and rent DVC. But I wouldn't cancel until you secure the rental, just in case. Disney cash reservation policy is much more generous than DVC.

I wonder if I cancel my cash reservation with Disney ONLY for the lodging would I lose my dining plan and then lose any reservations I have made?

Is your reservation a package deal? If not and you paid for the dining plan separately you should be able to. Any dining reservations you made will not be affected.

If you have a package with dining booked and you want to rent points, you will need to cancel the entire package. You can't cancel just the hotel and keep the dining plan with Disney. What you can do is rent the points and have the owner add on the dining plan for you. You'll need to pay it in full, however. Then cancel your package with Disney. If you already have ADRs made on your original package, they will not be impacted. ADRs are not linked to your package reservation.

Thanks for doing the math for me on this one - I haven't gotten into the nitty gritty of it yet but would definitely need to do the math for each resort we hope to stay at and the different options for each. There will be four adults in our party, no children. I think I remember also seeing that there are some really good hotel rates available for the WL in Sept - someone posted about getting a room for $190/night through some magical something or other - sorry, can't remember off hand! Maybe it wasn't through Disney and wouldn't qualify for free dining. I thought that Disney did offer some good room discounts in the fall. Would it be an either or situation - either the room discount or free dining but not both?

With four adults on a cash reservation the third and fourth will pay $25 each per night in a deluxe room. Disney pricing is for 2 adults in a room and any over are charged. That would be about $400 extra for a week after tax. DVC rentals do not charge for extra adults.

That's good to know... I think the additional cost was added in when I looked for rooms on Disney's site and selected 4 adults in my search. That might also explain why I wasn't seeing the deal for $190 that someone said they got. Cheapest I found was around $250 I think. Anyway, good to know that the DVC rentals don't charge extra. Thanks for the info!

Holy cow! I had totally forgotten about the extra money for additional adults. Good catch!

I love my DVC more every day.
