Just booked a January trip to Disney. We were there last July and then again at Christmas time...we got the APs in July and they expire July 25. We will be at VB for 4 nights in August and then stopping at WDW for 2 nights at BWV. We plan to go to the 'other theme park' for some Harry Potter fun. But, kind of on a whim we booked this Jan trip today (DH even let me book airfare...he usually makes us drive there) and I am thinking I should just renew the APs. We could pop in WDW parks while there this August as well as use the passes in Januar). We may even be back at WDW the end of July 2013 as well. Though we would need to renew again for that...unless... Can I, by some small chance, wait until our 8/23 visit to WDW to renew and have that be our 2013 expiration date? How do I renew and would I need to do it by 7/25/12?

I believe you have 30 days past expiration to renew but that doesn't add 30 days to your next expiration date, you keep the same anniversary.

I can't tell exactly from your post but if you're asking about renewing them in January, you can only renew within 30 days on EITHER side of expiration (so you could not renew in Jan.).

If I'm understanding correctly, you currently have APs which expire 7/25/12 and you want to renew them.

Like Bill said, you can renew at the renewal price for at least 30 days after expiration date. Sometimes CMs will do it even past the 30 days.

The only drawback to the renewal pricing is that the new pass will start its one year period immediately following expiration of the old pass. In other words, if you pay the lower renewal rate, your new AP will expire on 7/25/13. That's true even if you don't renew until your visit on 8/23/12.

The other option would be to buy a new Annual Pass at full price (less the DVC discount). The new pass would be valid from 8/23/12 to 8/23/13.

The best approach simply depends upon the timing of your future trips. Paying the extra dollars may still work out for the better if you end up visiting sometime between 7/25/13 and 8/23/13.

There are a few puzzle pieces missing from your scenerio to give you the best advice.

Will your July 2013 trip be done by July 25th? Do you have any plans to go back in fall/winter 2013?

The reason I ask is that if you would be going back again in the fall/winter of 2013 (or if your July trip won't be complete by the 25th), you'd probably be better off not renewing. You lose the $40 renewal discount, but you'd have a pass that ran from January to January and caught the extra trip/extra days. (Just enjoy Universal, as planned, for your 2 days in August 2012.)

However, if your only planned trips for 2013 are your January and July trips (and the July trip would be complete by the 25th), it sounds like renewing in July, getting the renewal discount, and also being able to use your passes on your 2-day August visit would be the best bet. Another thing to consider is that your Annual Pass shopping discount can also be used at Vero Beach.

Thanks everyone!

We will be going to Disney in Jan 2013 for 5 nights and then we may be going back at the end of July 2013 (past the 7/25 expiration date...7/27-8/3). I think we will not renew but wait until August to just get new APs ($40 more pp) and then the expiration date will cover this Aug trip, Jan trip and next July trip. We should know by August if the softball team my girls will be on will do the Nationals in Orlando next July or another Nationals. If another one, we won't get any APs or tickets this August (just get 2 days at Universal) and then we'll buy 5 day hoppers in January.
