DH and I are thinking of buying into DVC, but we are going to be making our first trip in January 2010, and every 2 years thereafter. So, if we buy this year, can we bank this year's points and next year's points and use it for Jan 2010? Or do we have to wait?

I just want to time this correctly.

If you bank this years points, they must be used next year or you lose them. Next years points can be banked to the following year. Remember your UY is when you get your points, and the UY determines the banking and borrowing windows, not the calendar year.

If you buy now, supposing you get a December UY, you will be able to use THIS YEAR's points in January of 2010. You will receive them December 1, 2008 and you must bank them by July 31, 2009(?). Then, on December 1, 2009, you will receive 2 year's worth of points, expiring November 30, 2010. Does this make sense? We are also planning on purchasing now and taking our first trip over Spring Break 2010.

Is this true? Won't I end up losing the 2008 points if I try using them for Jan 2010?

It will depend on what UY you get. We are in the process of buying a contract right now with a Feb UY. All of the points received on Feb 1, 2008 are being banked into 2009. We won't "receive" them until Feb 1, 2009. Then, they expire Jan 31, 2010. As long as you get a UY later than February (and you are not outside the banking window) any points you'd receive THIS YEAR would not expire until 2010 if they are banked.

As far as I know, Disney is currently selling AKV with December UY. That means you'd "receive" your points on Dec 1, 2008. If you bank them all, you'll "receive" them again, along with next year's points on Dec 1, 2009. Those 2 years worth of points will expire on November 30, 2010. You CAN bank the points from 2009, but the points banked from 2008 will be lost if not used by 11/30/2010.

I think I confused myself...Let's say you buy a 100 point contract with a December UY. You bank all 100 points for 2008. Now, you are planning a Jan 2010 trip so you can reserve at your home resort beginning in Feb(?) 2009. OK, now, your 2009 points aren't actually "in" your account yet, but they will be by the time you take your vacation in January 2010 so you can still make your reservation. By January 2010, you will have 200 points...100 that you banked from 2008 and 100 that you just received in December 2009. :teacher: If you need more, you can borrow up to 100 from your 2010 allotment.

Use Year is a very confusing topic. Right now, we are still in the '07 UY for people with an October or December UY because they won't "receive" their '08 points until the first day of the month of their UY. :confused3

I tried to clear this up for you...I hope I didn't make it worse!:upsidedow
