DVC Question about banking and borrowing

I am slowly becoming more familiar with the ins and out of DVC ownership as I am in the process of purchasing one at AKV through Disney. My question revolves around the banking and borrowing policy. The use year I am being offered through Disney is June or July I believe. Is it possible to bank your points for one year and then reborrow them? For example, if I bank my points in the first 8 months to make sure I get 100% of them and then decided I wanted to use some of them in the last 4 months of the year, can I reborrow them or borrow points from the following year? Also, can you purchase whatever use year you like or request a use year? I was under the impression from talking to my DVC representative on the phone that this wasnt an option. I just want to make sure I am in full understanding of what I am getting into here as I am known to take spontaneous weekend get-aways with my girlfriend every now and again and didnt want to be stuck paying for a room again because I cant borrow previously banked points.

Also, as a last question, is it difficult to get reservations at non-home resorts? I was planning on our first vacation being in May and wanted to stay in 2 studios as the BWV, but I dont know how feasible or unfeasible this will actually be. Thanks in advance for all your help.

Banked points may not be returned to their original Use Year, and cannot be borrowed or transferred. All banking transactions are final and irreversible.

No, you could not 'reborrow' previously-banked points, but you could borrow points from the next UY. Note that any points that you borrow cannot be returned back into their original UY.

There is no July UY so it must have been a June UY that was offered. They may have a limited number of points available in other UYs so if you really want a different one, tell your guide what you need and they might be able to accommodate you.

As Mike said, banking and borrowing are "final" transactions. What you can do is borrow points from the following UY. So if you wanted to travel in the last few months of your 2007 UY but had banked all of your '07 points, you could borrow '08 points for the reservation. Once borrowed they cannot be put back so you would want to be sure you were going to take that trip. Cancelling the trip would return the points to your account but being at the end of your UY, you would have only a couple of months to use 'em or lose 'em. This also illustrates why being able to pick a UY that fits with your usual travel plans can be important. It's better to have a UY where you are normally travelling early in the UY. If you have to cancel a trip, you will still be able to bank the points (providing you cancelled at least 31 days prior to check in) or use them for something else prior to the end of your UY.

Early May is one of the easier times to book a non-home resort. The other times when you will have good luck are September and late January. The most difficult times are probably from October until after New Years Day, Spring break, and any holidays/three-day weekends.

Hey, Rick. I sent you a PM.

Yes, all of the above is correct, but it won't be a problem if you use the points, or bank them, and then "borrow" from next year. Then when next year starts.........you just use banked points. I know, it's a little crazy.

But, we have done that, and it works. No problem.

It is NOT hard to get ressies at your non-home resort, only during some times of year, when it is particularly crowded..........but we have always made the reservation, and then wait-listed our preferred resort, and had no problems!

It is great!

Let me know if I can help. Also, don't forget to take advantage of the "free vacation" promo,.

Thank you for your help. I definately appreciate it. The only other question I had was what you meant by the "free vacation" promo; is that the developer points that the DVC representative mentioned on the phone? Thanks again for getting in touch with me. Its good to know people are soo helpful on here.

Also, I tried to PM you but it kept saying "error - postcount too low" I dont know if that means you need to post more before PM'ing people. If that is the case it seems a little odd to me, so I posted here instead. Thanks.

Yes, I think you need something like 10 posts to use PM.
