My husband and I are considering a DVC purchase - probably through resale - for our 15th anniversary. My husband is still a little unsure about the financial commitment. We currently vacation at Disney every couple of years and the kids and I want to go more often than that. Any positives to ownership you can share that might help convince my husband this is the way to go?

I had to post because my husband and I just joined DVC for our 15th wedding anniversary. I have booked a stay at the AKV for Christmas time. We are 4 nights in a one bedroom savanna view, and 2 nights in a studio savanna view (by my choice to try out the 2 different room types). Anyway I went to the disney website and to pay cash for that identical stay would be $4669. Of course, I would never have paid that but it really made my purchase look like a great deal with those facts.

If you have the money, stay at a moderate resort or better when you go and go at least every other year, DVC will definitely save you money. Well, unless you take more trips and add more points and become addicts. :rolleyes1

Go to link at upper right on this page DVC Point Charts ( under The TimeShare Store ) banner and calculate using both 2009 & 2010 charts for the resort(s) you'd most like to stay at and dates you'd most likely travel & how many nights and what size villa you'd need to get a much better idea of how many points would cover a vacation for you and your family (you may want to factor in an additional 10 - 20% extra on points just in case an adjustment to the points charts happen as just was announced beginning in 2010 ) If you travel every other year divide that number in half because you can bank one year into upcoming year to have 2 yrs worth of points to use; if you will travel every 3rd year divide the number by 3 because you can bank points into upcoming year and also borrow in the next allotment of points to have 3 yrs worth of points to use every three years.

Best wishes & hope you find a contract that fits your needs real soon :goodvibes

Congrats on your 15th anniversary! My husband & I are celebrating our 15th anniversary this year as well - with a visit to HHI and BCV in May (our 4th DVC add-on, coming up soon, is to be our anniversary gift to each other).

We go to a Disney park (Disneyland or Disney World) about twice a year - and we find our membership really helps with our taste in accommodations. If we were only going to the Disney parks "every other year" we wouldn't have bought in. Once a year would have been a minimum pattern for us to get into DVC.

It is a big investment - and the maintenance fees are there too, going up an average of 3.5% every year. Tell your husband that hotel rates also go up every year, and if you travel frequently and predicatably (which it sounds like you want to) it will pay off for you. We pay about $50/night in maintenance fees to stay at a DVC resort - but if we weren't DVC members, we would be paying the cost of a moderate resort (at least) which is more than 3X that amount per night.

Good luck! :goodvibes
