DVC Points or Cash for Cruise?

We used our DVC points to book a cruise for next month- as we have in the past. We are now beginning to think that using points for a cruise isn't the best use of the points. We love to cruise and will continue to do so but from reading the boards and knowing about the on-cruise booking it seems more prudent to just pay cash. We bought the points to use for our vacations but it is bothersome to know that other passengers get on-board credits, some as high as $300, and the cruise line offers a discount for pre-booking on the ship but there is no discount for using points. So I ask, doesn't it make more sense to just pay cash and save those points for another fabulous vacation or am I missing something? Thanks.

Actually when you book your next cruise while on board ship, you receive a discount not only for cash paid, but also for points paid cruises. Be sure to stop in as listed in the Navigator to take advantage of this.

We can never plan that far ahead so cannot take advantage of this. The advantage to booking using points, however, is that you can book a cruise even close to sail date, and pay the same amount, unlike cash bookings which are sold out in tiers; your best price being the furthest away from the cruise.
