DVC Points Not Covered By Tavelex Insurance

I have a reservation in May using transferred points and 15 points purchased from Disney ( one time UY points). I spoke with three CM's from MS and a representative from Travelex about purchasing the DVC insurance. Not until I spoke with a supervisor did I find out:

1. Transferred points are not covered under the DVC Trevelex Insurance,
2. Points purchased directly from Disney ( the once a UY purchase up to 24 points at $15/point) are not covered under the Insurance plan.
3. To be covered for pre-existing conditions, you still have to have some maintenance fees due to be paid at the time you Purchase the insurance. So, if you are one who pays off all your MF's in January and you haven't purchased your DVC Travelex policy, your SOL for pre-existing illness coverage.

I am so glad I didn't purchase it the previous times I spoke with MS. Why don't they know this? But more importantly why are these points excluded from coverage? Why does it matter that you still have to have MF's due at the time of purchase?

I had read about #3 from Jean's posts.

In my mind the insurance does not compensate enough to really be called "trip insurance." Just my opinion, but I have only bought it once for a big family trip. That was before the present plan came out, it was a one use deal.

DH and I buy Trip insurance for cruises, period and not necessarily from the cruise company.

I was more interested in getting my airfare covered, we are only using 60 pts. for VGC in addition to hotel stays. I agree with you though. Cruises it's a must.

Thank you for sharing what you discovered. All of your points, especially #3 were a big surprise to me. #1 & #2 make some sense to me, but I am completely baffled as to the reasoning for #3!

We self insure domestic trips, but always buy for international trips, including cruises. Do that mostly to be sure any accidents or unforeseen illnesses are covered.

We use insuremytrip.com because we can get a good price and coverage for just what we want/need. Their reviews are good, although it's hard to find any that have actually had to file a claim.

Thanks again.

The insurance gives you back the maintenance fees for those points. That's ALL you get with an insurance claim. You haven't paid those fees on the one time purchase points or the transferred points, so you aren't owed those fees back, basically. That totally makes sense to me, since it's those fees that are the currency of an insurance claim.

Not sure about the other bit, though.

Regarding #3: This is similar to pre-existing condition clauses in many travel insurance policies which require you to buy the insurance within a short time of booking your trip if you want pre-existing conditions covered. It makes sense to me because paying dues essentially "buys" the points for usage that year. I have not found this rule to be a problem. I just make sure to pay for the insurance a week or 2 before the maintenance fees are due in January.
