DH and I are considering joining DVC. We go often enough! Anyway, I know that it takes boo coodles of points to cruise, and since this is our real love, I wanted to know if you can combine points and money instead of borrowing points from future years. Or, is it strictly points.

Thanks for any input.

The first person in the cabin must be booked on points, you can use cash for the rest.

The first person in the cabin must be booked on points, but after that you can pay cash for the remaining pasenagers. Just to let you know, you pay a $75 reservation fee to DVC for them to make the booking. Also, DVC has specially negotiated cash rates with DCL, which are usually higher than the current rates available from DCL direct for all cash ressies.

The last few years ........DVC has raised the number of points it costs to cruise

. But you can also rent your DVC points out and pay cash for the cruise and come out ahead. You can only book 11 months out through DVC also.

that is what i would do , put your points for rent on the dvc rent/trade board in this forum and use the money to pay for cruise ..... we have rented points from the boards Many times and have had no problems doing the rental thing ...

We joined the DVC because for us, the DCL is our vacation - we want to just get on the ship and have EVERYTHING there and we do. No need to worry about driving, entertainment or kid's clubs! It's all on the ship! Often people forget that it costs extra to eat out, buy groceries or pay for entertainment or child care services - so even if it does seem like it "costs more" - for our points we cruise - Category 6, verandah!

We bought into DVC in 1999 and have only cruised! I agree with Rae, it's all included so worth so much more! With 4 kids the thought of going out to eat where you worry about cost and then they don't eat it (or cooking on vacation!) doesn't appeal to me. We have taken both sets of parents and my son's best friend on two separate 7 day cruises which we could NEVER afford to do even 1 cruise much less take people without DVC! Love it!

Disney6 - I see you are doing a couple cruise shortly. DH and I are planning to do a "just me and you, kid" cruise in January! I wonder what it's going to be like?!
A bit scary!!! But I think I'm up for the adventure!

We have owned DVC for three years, bought sight unseen - never stepped fot on the property and bought solely to cruise, many people think it is a waste of points but to us it allows adult time (with DS in a good safe environment) great meals, shows, entertainment, wonderful caribbean ports, it is the perfect use of our points. To insure we can sail each year ( we do a cat. 6) we pay points for one adult and one child and cash for the other adult- it works out to a seven day cruise in a veranda cabin for my bday each year for about 1600.00- that is less than we spend for a week at cape cod each summer!

Rae- yes, I'm already a bit nervous about it. Haven't spent a night away from the kids (DH & I together) ever. DS is 10 (11 next month), DD's are 6,5,4. Since we are going before you, I'll post how it was "kidless" as compared to with kids.

Ann- we have never seen any DVC property either. We bought over the phone, sight unseen. Went on the first cruise and my DH did an add on to double our points so we could cruise again!

Diana,
My Husband and I took TWO trips last year without our Two DD ages 13 & 10. Our first Adult only trip was last November to Epcots Food & Wine Festival. We met several of our friends there and did all the Adult things we don't get to do with kids. Our second trip without the girls was for the DVC Member cruise 2003. It was a little funny being on the ship without the girls and our veranda room seemed so BIG with only the two of us but we had a great time. The time we missed them most was when we were at Cast Away Cay. Since the member cruise went there twice, we knew the girls would have loved it! But they had school and could not come with us, either time. Our DD 13 told us "Have a great time, you deserve it."
You'll have a great time on your Adult only cruise.

We are using our DVC points on a cruise for the first time this summer. I think it is well worth it considering we probably would have never been able to do the cruise if we didn't have DVC.

For rae519 and disney6 - We took our first and only childless vacation 2 years ago (our boys were 5 and 8). The company I work for took all the employees and spouses on a 7 day Celebrity Cruise for our annual sales meeting. We found lots to do without kids. Do you know how nice it is to eat a steak and only have to cut your own? To stay up as late as you want and sleep as late as you want? Watch something on TV besides Nickelodeon and Toon Disney? Well, by day 4 my DH (must have lost his mind) and was missing the little darlings so he placed a collect call to them from Antigua. Not only did the 5 minute call cost us $65 when we got home but they cried as soon as they started talking to me (how did I know that would happen  ).
Anyway-it was a lot of fun but I probably won't do it again until their away at college. The truth of the matter is that I do enjoy having them around.

I guess now I should be convinced that DS and Grandma will be fine without me and DH around - seems like DH and I might have a few things to occupy our time together (like the old days?!)

Sounds wonderful!

We are going on our first Disney Cruise this August. Like has been stated above, without DVC we probably would never be taking this cruise, let alone being able to bring my mother, sister, and niece along. We just added on 130 DVC points this month. We got a call from our guide last evening letting us know that our settlement was finished. More points for more cruises!!!

We have been to WDW sooooooooooooo many times, we want to give DCL a shot!!!

I thought that renting points and paying cash might be better than booking on points until I read a thread on the DVC Board that members have to pay taxes on rental fees. When I calculated it we would only make about $7 after taxes per point renting (If we charged $10 per point). We are paying 173 points per person in a catagory 6 for next May. If we rented the points we would net only $1211. And the cash price with early booking is $1349 per person. We would actually lose money if we rented our points out to cruise. When we purchased DVC we created a spreadsheet to see how much a point would actually cost us (including a 5% increase in dues) and it was under $6. So I think that we are ahead in the game if we use points for our cruises.

I am not an attorney or CPA, but check into the tax implications for DVC ownership with your tax person and you might have a pleasant surprise!

That is NOT a good reason to buy DVC - but it sure makes it look ever better!!!

Andy - congrats on the new DVC points - Can't wait to settle on our new addition now that Disney has okay'd it!!

Keep in mind your family situation here. We have 3 kids and are limited to a category 4 room or 2 smaller rooms. We are going (less than a month!) on a 4 day wonder using points for everyone but DS(who cost $559) in a cat. 4. However, we used some 2002 points, all 2003 points and over half of our 2004 points to do it (we are doing 3 days at VWL after the cruise).
I have booked a 7 day using cash--although we have only made the down payment. We booked 2 connecting category 10 rooms (SPH!) and it costs $6800. I have 141 points left for 2004, which only would get me $1400. If I use all of my 335 points for 2005, I'll have another $3350--but no one could use those points until 2/04, just 3 months before my full payment is due, and I've never rented so I'm wary about that--if the points don't rent, where will I come up with $3350? We will decide after our cruise if we want to cruise again and take the rental points route.
I could get a category 4 using points for one adult and two children, but the entire cash cost is due when you BOOK--not 60 days prior. I don't want to put that much on my charge card.
If I only had one or two kids, I think using points would be much easier and use much less of my brain power ;) . But if you have a family of 5 or more, you would have to look at how many points you would really need to cruise effectively and if you can afford that many points.

Wow Robin my head is spinning after reading that.
I think you almost have to be a Philadelphia lawyer to figure out what is the best way to go about it with points and/or cash OR be just be independently wealthy :)
I've always thought about DVC and would have liked to have done it, but have had a time share for some time now and we trade to get places around WDW at a much lower price, but I know its not the same as being inside.
Very interesting thread and using your points is far from straightfoward, as I'm finding out reading this.
Cheers,
Grumbo

So true Robin. We have 4 kids and therefore can only cruise every other year (my parents are taking DH and myself this year!). We also get cat. 10's. So far we haven't been able to do anything else because we don't have the points, but getting my DH to go on vacation is like pulling teeth - hard! He doesn't want to outlay the cash so at least this way I know every other year we get to go somewhere! Worth it to me but maybe not to others!

DH and I are using our points to cruise in November. We were able to book one of the coveted SPR cabins and I'm thrilled! It does take a lot of points to cruise and even though we probably would not be able to cruise without using our points, I don't think for our family it is a good value. We have less than 200 points and like to take family with us so by using our points to cruise, that limits what we can do next year. I am grateful we had enough points to make this trip happen but I think from now on we will primarily be using our points at Hilton Head or Old Key West when we stay on property.

All in all, I am looking forward to this cruise and know we'll have a good time!
