DVC Points for Cruise Line

It is so nice to hear from people who know the ins and outs of DVC! We were planning on doing two contracts, one for 160 and one for 140 or whatever we can find that is close to that as long as it equals 300. We are looking at a resale for Beach Club right now. Will probably purchase after xmas. I thought about AKL but really like the location of Beach Club and can't beat that pool!

Thanks for answering all my questions!

See you on the boards!

Ann
Remember if you buy two separate contracts, you're looking at two closings which could easily approach $1000 total for the two. My suggestion is buy BCV for the best contract you can find then consider an add on at AKV or wait for a new resort such as, the Contemporary, CA or HI.

I don't know how settlement costs are calculated - I think it must vary state by state or something. We purchased 250 points - one contract with 200 points and a 2nd one with 50 points directly from Disney last winter and our settlement costs only appeared on the documents for the larger contract and was in the amount of only $124.55. The settlement costs on the smaller contract were $0. (I have them right here and am looking at them as I type!) So $1,000 in closing costs may be a stretch - I think it depends where you live....:confused3

He was talking about closing costs on resales - if you buy two resale contracts, each will have it's own closing costs. And resale closing costs are higher than Disney's - I paid $450 on a 150 point contract 3 years ago. Also Disney does not charge closing costs for add-ons. (which is why your second contract was $0). Thus the advice to buy one contract resale and then add on through Disney, particularly if you want a smaller add-on. (While the closing costs drop a bit for smaller contract, they don't drop much so the per point cost is higher plus smaller contract tend to go for a premium - between the two you really need to look at the total cost - buying from Disney may not be any more expensive even though the per point cost is higher - and it is easier)

You have all given me lots to think about as far as purchase. We are looking at doing the 300 points because we would like to have a family reunion in fall of 2009 that would require us to bank next year's points and use 2009 points to book two 2BR units. Not sure if we can wait to purchase other options through Disney, other than Animal Kingdom. How does that work with "home" resorts if you have points in 2?

Does anyone know when the HI, CA or contemporary options will come up?

CA will likely be next year, HI will likely be 2009 or after for any sales. CRV has been speculated and there is a lot of info to suggest it will happen but has not been formally announced. If the only reason you're buying the 300 points is for the single trip, I'd suggest you rethink and buy the number of points you'll need every year then look at another option for the single family reunion trip.

If you have points at more than one resort, you have more than one home. Each resort you own points at will be a home resort. Those points will only have the home resort advantage (11 month booking). For example, if you have 200 at AKV and 100 at BCV, you can only use the 200 AKV at 11 months to make a reservation at AKV. Once you hit 7 months out, you can use the BCV points at AKV.
