I'm not a DVC member, but have seen a few websites where I can rent unused points from other members. Does anyone have any experience with this? Is it easy to do? Works well? Can you use the dining plan? Recommend any specific website?

Does anyone have any experience with this?

yes.

Is it easy to do? Works well?

it's relatively easy but for it to work well, you may want to do some homework.

Can you use the dining plan?

yes, but no "free dining." not ever.

on the bright side you don't have to add tickets and can buy from a discounter like undercovertourist or mapleleaftickets.

but the owner will have to add the DDP in advance (at least 48 hours) and handle all discussions with member services. you are not renting "points" so much as renting a reservation. the DVC owner will control the reservation completely until you check in.

Recommend any specific website?

if you are signed in, you can get to this forum and there will be an ad at the top of the page for david (dvcrequest). that is the easiest way to do it.

http://www.disboards.com/forumdisplay.php?f=29

you can also rent from individual DVC owners (which you are also doing with david's service- he is a broker and will help connect you and walk you through the process).

i'd recommend scanning through the Considering Renting from a DVC Member? thread if you prefer to deal with an owner directly.

Bear in mind that a few things have changed since the Considering Renting thread was started. The DDP, as mentioned, has to be added by the DVC member at least 48 hours prior to arrival...and it must be paid in full when it is added...you can no longer pay at check-in.

SO you will need to make the DDP payment arrangements with the DVC Member, either by giving them your CC number, send them Disney gift cards, or setting up a 3 way call with Member Services so they can get the payment info. Other than the pre-payment aspect, the DDP has become less and less of a money saver over the years. We do not use it. We don't eat a big meal every day, and usually do table service for lunch. It is less expensive than dinner, and gets us out of the worst heat of the day.

Do read up on the subject. You have gotten some great answers already. I will add that to your "Works well?" question, it seems to work quite well most of the time and for the renter, you are getting a great deal. Be aware of the current rack rates (available at mousesaver.com), so you can see what you are saving. Also be aware that what you are getting is more than a regular hotel room.

Let me also add that the Timeshare Store rents out points. I worked with them on a possible rental. They were really accommodating. All I had to give was give them basic info (number of travelers, names, ages, dates and resort desired, etc...) and they got right back to me to tell me that our dates and desired resort was available, and the price of the reservation. I was unable to book it, unfortunately, b/c of a change in work schedule.

As a new member who paid cash rates the past few years before buying into DVC, I really wish I had looked into renting earlier. I would have saved several thousand dollars over the past few years.

Good luck.

We're pretty new to the DVC rental thing, so we were VERY wary of renting directly through a DVC owner and were willing to pay a little extra for the added assurance of using a broker. We did oodles of research on this and in the end booked through Scott at *************** and WOW was it easy! We booked a 2BR villa at Wilderness Lodge for January 2012 - we priced it out directly through Disney Vacations and then found we save about 50% (around $2600 through Disney vs. $1700 with ********) by renting the points. I noticed most owners posting to rent their points charged around $10 per point and through **********s.com we paid a couple dollars more per point but everything was taken care of for us (contract with the DVC owner, guarrantees, etc). We've gotten immediate replies to all our questions, and they can book your dining plan and Magic Express for you too. I wish we had known about this sooner.

I've used Scott at *********** as well and have nothing but good things to say about him. He responded to all questions VERY quickly and has a ton of knowledge. I would recommend him in a heartbeat.

Actually, points are worthless to you unless you are a member. What you are purchasing is a reservation that the member makes with their points.

Make sure you are aware of cancellation policies. Many owners will have a no cancellation policy and therefore you need to be prepared to use or lose.

I am considering renting for the first time. Would it be easier to go through David's Vacation Club Rentals for a first-timer or try to find a renter here on the boards that is selling for $10 or $11 pp? I plan on going (month removed) 2012 if that makes a difference. I have a friend whose parents own DVC, but they own at OKW and I want to stay at (resort removed) or (resort removed). What would be the best option for me?

"easiest" solution is to talk to david around (month removed) and tell him what you are looking for. you can save a few bucks by searching for a (resort removed) or (resort removed) owner on your own. waiting for the 7 month window by working with an OKW owner might lead to disappointment ((resort removed) will almost certainly be booked for (month removed) by the 7 month window).

You would want to book (resort removed) prior to 7 months since that is a very popular time.

That's what I was thinking I should do. It's $650 (calculated through the points calculator on David's website) to stay in the cheapest room at (resort removed) Sunday-Friday through him and I'd only be saving myself roughly $100-$150 if I tried finding a (resorts removed) owner selling for $10 or $11/point. I'd feel more safe going though David so I think that's what I will do. I'm new to this so going through someone who does this often makes me feel more comfortable. Plus, I may not find a (resorts removed) owner selling $10 or $11/point by the 11 month mark that I feel I can trust and I feel it's not worth the risk to try and save $100-$150. Thanks for the help. :)

That's what I figured.

Any time you are looking at the cheapest villa, you need to book it at 11 months out exactly. Lots of members with that resort as their home also look for the cheapest stay they can get.

Instead of borrowing points on my contract I decided to rent points through the Timeshare Store. They were wonderful!!

We gave them the dates and our top 3 resort choices. They let us know what was available and then the owner booked what we wanted. They emailed us a contract and we sent it back with a check. Easy.

Contact them and let them know what resort you are interested in booking. They may have an owner who would book at the 11 month window for you.

Does anyone know if David or the Timeshare store do transfers? I know they do rentals but I wasn't sure about transfers. Although I think transfers tend to be safer because you know immediately if it went through I guess. I am looking to transfer for the first time and am nervous about it!
