DVC point rental question

We are considering renting points to stay in a 1BR DVC villa. Going through one of the established rental companies would stretch our budget, but the risk of renting from an individual stranger gives me some concern.

However, I know and trust a current DVC owner. If a renter was willing, would they be able to transfer the points to the owner I know, and then that owner book the reservation for me? Are there fees involved with a point transfer?

There isn't any fee for transfers but we have had issues with transfers in the past.

Renting from someone you don't know can make you feel uneasy but our family and most owners who rent don't have any issues with providing a written agreement, references, and a post history here on the DIS. You can see the reservation in your MDE account to verify that it exists.

Thanks for the info, Bill. Is it possible for the renter to cancel the reservation after it's made or should I be in the clear after seeing it in MDE?

It is possible for the owner to cancel the reservation up until the time you check in. That is true even if you go through a broker, however, if we rent out points through a broker we don't get all the money from the rental until after you check in, so there is way less chance anyone will cancel before your vacation.

As for transferring, it would be doable, but someone has to agree to it. We are limited on the number of times we can do transfers.

I don't know if this will help, and it was a long time ago, but before we bought DVC we rented twice. From two different people. And both times, things went very very smooth. As bill said, just look for someone who has a stable post record here on the DIS and then get the appropriate references/agreements from them.

Another issue with transferring points is that most people want to be paid in full before doing a transfer as once the points are gone, they can't get them back, thus, this is technically more risky than renting.

In reality, renting points on this site has been 99.99% safe.

Most renters will take paypal and they will offer you some safety as it gives you time to verify a reservation was made.
