Planning a family trip for Thanksgiving 2021...I am definitely wanting to rent points and leaning towards a brokerage just because it's such an in-demand time and to guarantee access to more resorts. I am wanting them to look right at the 11-month mark. Wondering if anyone has done this before? Is it ok to request the reservation a day or two before the 11-month mark to make sure they are looking right when it becomes available?

Also, would it be ok to PM on the other thread if I see someone post for a resort I am looking for? Before 11-month mark? Don't want to bother an individual necessarily however in a perfect world, I would use the Rent/Trade forum vs brokerage.

Apologize if this is the wrong board but I couldn't find any other that it would fit better into.

I edited out details as that is not allowed, You can certainly contact a broker and ask them about getting in line for a resort you want...please do not post dates or resort in this thread...so that they can line up an owner who has points at that resort,

Just be sure that you are comfortable with the rental process and how things are handled going forward if there is an issue, A lot of renters learned during this pandemic the meaning of truly non refundable or changeable,

I am going to be blunt, If you are at all nervous of renting from an individual vs. a broker, I don’t think renting is the right move.

You pretty much need to go into a rental being okay with losing your money should something happen.

I used to recommend it but after this year, and the issues both renters and owners had, including with brokers, I just can’t any longer without people understanding that something could cause you to have to cancel your trip that is not your choice. Closed resorts, quarantines, no parks, etc.

Renting can save money but you give up a lot. Another thing is give the park reservation system, I’d be prepared to get those booked ASAP if you do rent to ensure you can get in during your trip as it appears that will be in place through 2021 for sure.

I do also think you will see some good discounts from Disney next year that will severely reduce the savings from renting..

Keeping out any value judgments on point rentals, brokers, etc., I know for the one we used (David's), you can put in the request one calendar year before your trip, which is what we did. I believe you'd be in line before anyone else who is requesting the same length of stay and same resort. You'd still need to wait until the 11 month mark for them actually book it though.

We did that when we made both our original request, for April this year, and then for our rescheduled trip for April of 2021. We were requesting a longer period of stay (8 days and 9 days respectively) so we fell behind someone who was requesting 7 days or less, but it was good for our peace of mind to have it submitted, i.e. that we did everything we could to find what we were looking for. We tend to be people who plan way too early (for instance we already have our park reservations set up for next April's trip, which I did the day that park reservations opened up. Way overkill, but that's just how we operate). And it didn't take too long after the 11 month to get what we wanted.

Once again, I'm not making any value judgments on whether its a good idea (although like others have posted, it would be a good idea to research the state of the point rental market if you're doing it for the first time), just our experience with submitting our request before the 11 month mark.

You need to talk to a broker long before the booking window to get it all set up, assuming anyone wants to give points to brokers anymore. I can think of a couple I wouldn't do business with on either side.

I would definitely be making a cash reservation as a backup, if you are relying on a broker.

I don't think there's anything wrong with starting a conversation with someone renting on the boards about walking a reservation, if you are worried about availability. The initial reservation is hard, but walking is not.

Thank you! This is the answer I was looking for.

Great - good to know! Especially about working with individual owners. Thank you!
