DVC Point Rental Explanation

I originally posted this on the budget board, but a fellow DISer pointed out that I'd probably get a better response from you folk!

Over the past couple days of exploration of the site (as you might have noticed, I'm a new DISer) I've noticed a lot of people talking about renting DVC points, and what a savings this is when staying at deluxe hotel. I don't know a whole lot about DVC to begin with, and have no idea how point rentals work. Anyone want to give an explanation? I'm curious how this works! Thanks!

Welcome to the DIS.

Here are a couple of older threads that may help explain renting DVC points. One is from the renters points of view, the other from the owners point of view. Please bear in mind that some of the info has changed since these threads were started. Like any dining plan has to be paid for immediately when it is added to a reservation, you no longer are able to pay at check-in.
