I am a newbie looking at buying into DVC. Do the point charts change every year or are they set to the year you buy them for the life of your contract. For example, 2009 points a week 2 bedroom in the lowest season is 270. If I bought tomorrow, would it always be 270 or would it increase for me every year?

It might change, but if points go up somewhere they have to go down equally elsewhere in that resort for the year. They just reallocated points for 2010, raising points during the week and lowering them a bit on the weekend and for some other times of the year. In some cases they raised one room category and lowered another.

It shouldn't be a big change, maybe a few points.

However, if you want to use points outside of DVC, they renegotiate those points every year. So the DCL might take 400 this year, 500 the next and 300 the following.

By the way, class of '78 - Civil Engineering.

As noted, total points for the year for a DVC resort do not change but they can shift points around. That has happened twice, once in the early-90s at OKW when they lowered and raised different seasons. The second time is right now as the point charts are changing somewhat dramatically for all resorts effective 2010 mainly to raise weekdays and lower weekends but number needed for a week total is also going up or down a little in many categories.

Go here for comparison charts that show points for 2009 and the change for 2010: http://gallery.me.com/drowells#100081

When purchasing, it is best to include a hedge, i.e., purchase more than what you exactly need for your planned annual trip so you are protected against possible future shifts in points.

Do the point charts change every year?

no. the change in 2010 is the first in about 15 years.

or are they set to the year you buy them for the life of your contract?

no. doesn't matter if you bought in 1995 or 2007, the pt charts are different in 2010 than in 2009.

For example, 2009 points a week 2 bedroom in the lowest season is 270. If I bought tomorrow, would it always be 270 or would it increase for me every year?

as other posters have said, neither is true. if you buy to stay sun-thurs, there is a chance that pt costs for your stays will increase...but only if weekend costs decrease. the point charts can be reallocated but cannot increase across the board.

Actually, I think the change amounts to more than "a few points". Admittedly I primarily use my points from Sunday - Thursday. My stays in 2009 will be 240 points. The same stays in 2010 will be 276 points. If my math is right that is a 15% increase - which I call significant.

Curious..did any part of your week change "seasons" with the new chart or is this strictly from increases Sunday through Thursday?

We recently saw a change.

Weekdays became more popular. So, to balance demand and cost, DVC had to increase points for weekday stays in 2010, which resulted in a decrease in points for weekend stays. So if you look at the 2010 charts you will see that change.

The same could happen if one season becomes more popular. You would see points increase for that season and decrease in another -- or others -- to balance.

Overall, points will stay the same when added up for an entire year at any given resort for a given room size and view.

And remember, what's a 'bad' change in the point charts for one person may be a good change for someone else. I'm thrilled that the weekend points went down; that will make it more feasible to start my vacation on Friday night or Saturday, and thus potentially save a vacation day or two each time I make a DVC trip.

I agree! It was a great change for me as I generally do two weekends to maximize Disney time and minimize vacation days taken at work. :cool1:

Sorry for the delay! This was a strictly apples to apples comparison. Sunday - Thursday, same season - strictly Sunday - Thursday increases!

I do understand, and I know the change is here to stay. I looked at the point charts and the stay you mentioned in the low season (I looked at BCV) would save you 3 points. My habit of two trips, 5 nights each, Sun - Thurs, would "cost" me an additional 10 points. So those who say good for some, not for all - well said! I'll certainly still be there with a smile on!

AND FRI-SAT DECREASES!!!

Ie. cup half full for those of us who benefit from the weekends

The thread has passed into the realm of discussion the 2010 point charts. All such discussion is limited to this thread.

Thanks.
