DVC Point Charts for 2011 - Post chart release discussion begins on Pg 14

Just did some more number crunching and now I am fuming. I was planning on taking the family and splurging on a BLT MK view grand villa for my 50th birthday 2/11. I was estimating points on the 2010 schedule. Sat night was 169 pts Sun-Tue was 112 each. Total 505 pts. NOW (2011) Sat night is 170pts and Sun-Tue is 145 pts each. Total 605 pts. Thats crazy. 100 points more for the same room. If you look at the current rental price of say $10 per point, this trip will cost an extra $1000.00 But that is no longer an issue because NOWI don't have enough points to take the trip. (At least not in a grand villa). The Grand Villas will soon truely be Grand, because they will be only for the rich. JMHO

Recheck the point charts. A BLT GV MK view for Saturday night, Dream season is 144 points, 25 points LESS than 2010. I compute your trip will go up from 505 to 510 points. Hope this sounds better to you!!

I think you need to look at the charts again. The points that you quote for 2010 are in a different season than the points you quote for 2011. The points for the season that you are quoting from 2010 are only 144 points for Sat. and 122 points for Sun-Tue. in 2011, thus your planned trip would only be 510 points. Still an increase, but perhaps a more managable one. Hope it works out for you.

Are you sure you are reading the charts right? Nights up to and including 2/15 are in Dream season. Nights on/after 2/16 are in Magic. The same was true in 2010. But, you're quoting Magic season point values for 2011, but Dream in 2010.

If you have one weekend night and three weekday nights in Dream season, in 2010 that's 505 pts. In 2011, it's only 510 (3*122 + 144).

Edited: er, what RevBob and wdrl said. ;)

I think they flattened weekday vs weekend a bit too much.

Does anyone besides me think that weekends will be harder to book now. Anyone within driving distance can easily use their points just to book multiple 2 or 3 day weekends.

Example: OKW 1br Choice season: weekday 24, weekend 27 (only 3 more points)
In 2009 it was weekday 18, weekend 41

No major impact for me. The trip I just completed in a one bedroom is the same number of points 2010 and 2011, even though the charts changed. My june trip in a studio would be 2 points less in 2011 than in 2010.

What fraction of DVC membership is easy driving distance? Even someone from Atlanta has an appx. 7 hr drive just to get there---that's farther than I think of for weekend trips unless there's something special going on.

Similar for us when we compare our BLT trip coming up in March 2010 versus March 2011, they were exactly the same number of points. However, when we ran the numbers for a family gathering we are planning for June 2011 the required points went way down. And then we realized AKV's chart was wrong. Knew it was too good to be true.

There are a lot of owners within driving distance. Plus, with low airfares, weekends aren't out of the question point wise.

In addition, many people who did 5 day weekday stays in the past may switch to 7 day stays, or 5 day stays that include weekends.

No real major changes for my usual trips either. I just ran the #'s and I'm within 1-3 points from the 2010 point charts.

Booking early is going to become even more important for weekend nights.
I just booked BCV studio for March 12 (sat night) and it was still available and has been for the last 2 weeks I have been tracking it.
The other nights have been sold out for months but I already have the other days I need.
Most likely this will not happen in 2011.
I know if I lived within 4 hours of WDW, I would spend every weekend at BCV with the 2011 point charts.

DVC will most likely gauge demand and readjust in 2012. I think the reallocations will be a staple as DVC continues to grow and expand. I sure regret that GCH add-on!! The points were already ridiculous and now the increase in weekend points makes me want to just tough it out at the Candy Cane Inn!!:rotfl:

Going from 112 points to 145 points is a 29.5% increase. I thought there was a 20% cap on changes. there appears to be numerous cases of increases exceeding 20%.

IIRC, Florida is around third on the list of states with the most members.

Thanks guys, my error. The stay went up only 5 points. The trip is back on. good looking out!!!:thumbsup2

Stupid question but WHY are the points changing and WHY have they ever changed?

I know that when we bought we were informed as everyone else was that points could be reallocated.

But most people bought pts based on when they expected to travel and what size accomodations they would want. Like many we made sure we bought a few more pts just in case.

But my question is why is it benefical to Disney to reallocate? If a resort if sold out like most of DVC is (short of AKV, BLT and a small portion now of SSR), not sure how it helps Disney.

Disney doesn't get any more money if I use my pts. I would think they would be happier if I didn't use my pts, then they could give them to CRO to rent for $$$.

Even factoring in the idea that maybe they are left with odd rooms Fri or Sat that couldn't be rented because people with smaller contracts were only booking sun-thurs.

I wouldn't think this would be that many, plus I bet some with smaller contracts were banking and going every other year, which would open up more rooms for rent. With lower fri/sat some of those bankers may not need to bank anymore and Disney would lose that Fri/sat for rent.

I just think that overall it upset many DVC'ers who now may have to alter vacation schedules and I can't see how it will bring in that much more $$ to Disney. What am I missing?

This is an instance where Disney, the mother corporation, doesn't really benefit, the purpose of a reallocation is to balance demand and occupancy. Optimally, any point based timeshare should be booked at near capacity every day. In fact, these types of changes to balance demand should be for for the long term benefit of the membership, not Disney.

As you can see the points only went up 5 points not 33 as the poster stated. That's less than 1% of an increase.

Here's a first. The points charts for Beach Club Villas and Boardwalk Villas preferred view have always been identical. No longer the case for 2011. Beach Club Villas 2011 point chart is differant.

Also Beach Club Villas took a major re-allocation for 2011 for 1 and 2 bedrooms during adventure and choice season. Went up a lot during Adventure and Choice, went down a lot during Dream and Magic.

Sure, but 49 states aren't named Florida, and if the tail is heavy, it's still not that many people. In 2003, Hunt/Rasulo gave a percentage breakdown for the visitor profiles of the two US resorts. Disneyland was quoted as "50% local". WDW is 10%. I'm not sure what "local" means here---probably day-trippers, but it's an insightful number.

Even so, unless you think DVC is incompetent, it's unlikely that weekends are going to be super-hard to get. DVC has the actual figures for weekday/weekend demand *and* they know how that demand changed in response to the last reallocation.
