DVC point changes

I just listened to Jeremy's question on the email podcast, regarding the change in DVC points for accomodations.

In it, Jeremy seemed to indicate that the points went up for the smaller accommodations, and down for the larger ones. I don't know if that is strictly true across the board.

In general, what the change was is that points for weeknights (Sun-Thu) for ALL accomodations went up, and points for weekend nights (Fri-Sat) went DOWN. This appears to be an attempt to cut back on the amount of weekday-only stays by DVC members attempting to conserve their points, often by splitting the stay with a cash reservation at another resort. It also may be due to member comments with regards to the cost of the weekend stays. In the process, the points for a week may have gone up or down somewhat, depending on the season.

I'm not sure which resort Jeremy calls home, but I can see that for OKW there definitely seemed to be something like Jeremy stated - that the smaller rooms went up and the GVs went down. But I haven't seen this true in the other point charts - in most cases, the points for studios may have gone up a couple points in one season, but down for another, and usually only a couple points (larger rooms may differ by larger amounts).

For instance, a studio at BCV for a week went up 1 point for Adventure Season, but down one point in Choice and Premier Seasons. But a 1BR went up 3 points in Adventure Season, 2 points in Dream Season, and 10! points in Premier season, and down 3 points in Choice.

Even the grand villas at SSR went up and down by season.

OKW does appear to be an exception in that regard - the GVs went down in points across the board - but so did the studios in 3 out of the 5 seasons.

DVC does have the right to reallocate the points in (almost) any way they see fit - so long as the total number of points for the resort for the year do not change. (I think there may be a few other complicated limits as well). But in doing so they risk alienating the membership.

There has been some very "spirited" discussions on the DVC boards with regards to the point changes. Unfortunately this did seem to catch a lot of people off guard (it's only ever happened once before, and only at OKW), and a lot of people who bought points based on specific point costs for their expected stays are unfortunately finding themselves short now by just a point or two.
