Hi -
I've been using the DVC Point Manager and the DVC Planner for a couple years and just love them. but now I've just purchased an apple computer. Are there any such programs for us MAC users? Thanks and Happy Holidays.

Not that I know of- we're a mac family at home- welcome. Heard on the way home that Apple is one of the only comuter companies to have an increase in sales lately. Supposidly people are buying Ipods, like them, then go to a mac store and then see what they've been missing. The Disney DVC site wasn't mac friendly after the redo- but now seems OK. I made a simple spreadsheet to track my points although it's not as elegant as caskbills one- which is really impresive. Good luck and enjoy your mac.

Can you point me to the planners that folks are using? We might be able to come up with something using RealBasic to build a similar tool for us Macheads.

Better yet...what do folks want out of a planner?

  • Resort
  • Points used
  • Balance
  • Calendar
  • Accomodations
  • Etc.

Caskbills has made one for the PC DVC members out there. Here is his web site,http://web.nalu.net/~wneth/dvcplanner.htm. If you can make one for the us Mac users that would be great!! :earboy2: All I would ask for is to have the same options that Caskbill has if that is possible! I hope you can come up with something!! If you do you can e-mail me with the new program.
Thanks

Macmonster....I'd like to know if you come up with something too. I just purchased my first Mac last month. I did as the guy who writes the computer column in our says and went "running and screaming" to the Apple store because I was fed up with PC's and the "blue screen of death."

Just get ready for the "spinng pizza of death" - with a newer mac and enough memory you won't see it very often.

Have Fun, Bob

Several months ago I was corresponding with another DIS'er who was interested in getting my DVC-Planner program rewritten for a MAC. He pointed me to a site that detailed how a Visual Basic program (such as the DVC-Planner) would convert to a MAC program using one of the MAC languages. I spent several hours looking at what was required and unfortunately, many of the routines I had in VB would not convert at all to the MAC. So sorry, but the DVC-Planner, the DVC-Chart, nor the new soon to be released DVC-Tracker programs will not appear as a MAC version as they just can't be done as a direct conversions, or even an indirect conversions.

If someone wants a MAC vesion they would have to create something from scratch.

Keep in mind that both my DVC-Planner and my DVC-Chart programs are copyrighted. If someone wrote a program for the MAC that basically emulated my program, it would be a copyright infringement. However if someone did want to basically copy the form and function of my program, I would be willing to work with them provided proper credits were given.

MAC...MAC...MAC...MAC...MAC...

It's a Mac...or if you must, an iMac. MAC is what you tap to get money in the Philadelphia metropolitan area...something that most of ya'll call ATM's.

And don't let Caskbill's FUD scare you from writing your own application if for some reason a spreadsheet just isn't good enough. Just don't copy his interface nor steal the underlying code nor use any Disney trademark/copywrite without the express written consent of the Disney Corporation.

Would not think of infringing upon others work at all. My focus would be to use the general concepts and rewrite the interface and code using RealBasic to run on the Mac side utilizing some of the interface conventions generally desired byt Mac-heads. Sometimes we just "Think Different" as the old advertisements go. Interestingly, with RealBasic Pro the application can be made cross platform for the Mac and Windows as long the rules are followed.

I have used Caskbill's application before on one of my PC's and loved it. It is very comprehensive and well designed. Whatever, I come up with will definitely be a work in progress and, as Caskbill will attest, it will not be something whipped out in a couple of evenings.

In my real life I support Microsoft products on 25,000 workstations mainly focusing on Office and use Macs at home as a nice break in the tedium.

As I have parts available I will post them and make them available. Caskbill...I may have some ???'s if you don't mind and of course my main programming source will have to be coerced to give me some of his free time. I will probably have to bribe him with some points!!!

Wish me luck!

Funny, I always thought of it as the spinning beach ball. As you said, ram takes care of it. G5 doesn't hurt either.

For the record, I use the DVC point calculator, which is a premade Excel spreadsheet that keeps things nice and organized. Nothing like the software PC people get to use, but so far it's been really helpful. If anyone needs to know where to get it, I'll track down where I found it and post the link.

Joe, Mac? MAC? Didn't know it was such a big deal. Sorry to step on your toes. Since the OP used MAC in the topic, how was I suppose to know that was so unacceptable? Do you also get upset if someone says EPCOT instead of the now current Epcot? Hey, I had (still have) one of the first Apples' ever made. Purchased it in 1978. It was a good computer, and I have nothing against Apple nor against Mac users.

By the way, when a user installs my DVC-Planner progam they must click that they agree with the EULA in order to complete the installation. That agreement by the user includes prohibiting any reverse engineering of the product.

Even though I offer the program free to anyone who wants to use it for non-commercial purposes, you should know that I put in over 500 hours of R&D and programming time, and several hundred dollars in cash expenditures and on-going costs, to make the program available. All I ask is that if someone wants to use my program as a model for form and function for a Mac equivalent, that some credit be given for my original work, that the new work is protected both for my interests as well as the interests of the new developer for any changes/enhancements they may incorporate, and that the developer does not charge anything for the product. This would be for everyone's protection in case any commercial venture was ever considered or attempted.

If someone wants to create a totally different program that does not emulate mine in any way then they are free to do so. This includes meaning any totally different program does not use nor essentially copy nor emulate any of the special features of my program.

The only reason I posted in the first place was because another poster had previously stated that if someone created a program for the Mac that they would really like it if it did the same things as my program.

Michael, there's a good chance you're also speaking of my original DVC-Planner program which was the Excel spreadsheet version, titled DVC Points Calculator (this was originally developed in 2001 and version 1.5, the last version, was released Mar 22, 2002)

This program is no longer supported by me and I do not update it anymore. Instead it has been replaced by the current DVC-Planner PC program which is the executable program. The spreadsheet program does not have information for Saratoga Springs, nor does it have many of the features of the current PC program.

The original spreadsheet is still available at Simtel.net

Look under the Category Business, and the Sub-Catagory Calendars, and the title DVC Points Calculator 1.5

Over the years the program has also found it's way to other distribution sites, and several people who run a number of different Disney related sites have also placed links within their home site pages.

One way to probably find some sites is to do a google search on 'Caskbill', but Simtel.net is the original site that I submitted the program to.

It's not...I forgot to add the :p

I'm not disparaging your efforts, especially since many of the applications I use are GPL'd, but your copyright claim here (not in the EULA) sounded overly broad. From what I interpreted, I'm not even supposed to use a clickable calendar without your blessing since that's a feature of your app. And to me, that's FUD. :confused3
