We thought our DVC stay would encompass any Orlando area stays. After all the whole point was 'deluxe' accommodations at a moderate price. We've owned 5 years however between sharing with our adult kids and family vacations we're not even in our 2013 UY (Dec) and it's stripped with some points borrowed from 2014. We've added more pts, are on the WL for more pts, stayed at the Dolphin for the 2 F&W and finally rented pts from Daddio.

Does anyone else find that their DVC doesn't cover all their Orlando vacation needs??

DH thinks we need to practice more self-control on the vacation front - this from the man who just took us to NY and Canada (his idea - not mine :flower3:).

You would really need to look at how many points you purchased and what type room you typically book. Of course the sharing with your kids probably makes a difference. For example, if you stay in a studio at BLT TPV for a week during magic season you would need about 190 points(I'm overestimating and other resorts require less points). If you wanted to stay in a 1bdrm for that time, you would need about 380 points. The problem may be that the number of points you purchased no longer meets the way you want to travel. Whether or not you borrow points from another use year is up to you. Doing so just means that you may have to go a couple of years without using your points to book trips.

We currently feel we have too many. We just want to go as often as we used to or stay as long when we do go now that the kids are teenagers.

Take a deep breath. Add up all your expenses from all your trips this year and see if you really want to spend all that money. That's what we did in about 2005 when we took four trips. And were spending a whole lot of money. We looked at our expenses, sold two of our five contracts and now go once a year for a nice vacation to WDW. We also go to the beach (not VB) for a week or head to a national park.

And let those kids pay for their own vacations unless the room size doesn't change.
Did you use points to stay at Dolphin?
Points can't be used at the Dolphin.

didn't use points to stay at dolphin - used SW vacations. This allows me to build my pts so we usually fly for free to FL, except when I fly my adult kids back and forth to FL - which I've been doing a lot lately = longer story.

Anyway - no points to stay at Dolphin (not DVC or Starwood)

We don't want to be in this situation - which is why we rented. We keep thinking we'll slow down

The first part my husband agrees with you but I think it's the second part that cost us and put us in the renting / buying vacation stage. Currently I have a stack of paper sitting here and am trying to compile a spread sheet to see what we're doing :sad2: :rolleyes1 popcorn::  :guilty:

Sounds like you are having a blast! :cool1::cool1:

So keep it up!

I too just booked my march 2014 trip and had to borrow. (June use year)

We moved to Fl last July and have been to Disney 3 times, did a DCL cruise on the Dream,(cash) and have 2 weekend trips planned for Oct and Dec and a week long one for march at the GFV...super excited.

It doesn't, but it wasn't supposed to.

We still want to stay onsite at Universal. We don't mind (at all!) staying at non-DVC resorts at WDW. I'm intrigued by some of the other resorts in Orlando, and someday want to stay at Windsor Hills or a similar place. It all seems awesome.

Maybe a few more points would be nice so we can keep hosting family or so we don't *have to* have split stays, but we don't mind spending the cash (or free hotel nights from DH's travel) on the other places, either.

We have added on 4 times since our original purchase and right now we feel we have just the right amount of pts to cover our DVC vacations. As our family has grown we find it necessary to book 2 BR units all the time

In our family it is not my DH that thinks we should practice more self-control but rather it is I saying it to my DH :rotfl:.

To answer your question, not usually except for this year. In June we took a wonderful trip out to DLR (first time) and used most of our points to stay at VGC, loved the resort BTW :goodvibes. I thought we were done with our vacations until about 2 weeks after we got back, DH sprang the news that he booked a trip for my 40th birthday in October so we can go to F&W (something I have always wanted to do but couldn't) and MNSSHP...my birthday is really in December but since my job doesn't allow me to take that month off, he and our kids are taking me earlier. He had to borrow all but 2 points from 2014 because we are staying 7 nights in a 1-bedroom at SSR and then paid cash for an extra night because 7 nights was just not long enough. Believe me I am not complaining, I am thankful that my DH is just as Disney obsessed as I am, but I really wasn't expecting this.

Because we used up all of 2014 points, and we really don't want to borrow again for next year's vacation. Instead we are planning on taking a Disney cruise and just paying cash for a couple of days at a Moderate resort either before or after our cruise. However, we are in the market to add on (need to find the right contract first) because we normally go in the off season and stay in a studio. But since our kids are getting older, and when they get to high school (2 years away), we won't be able to go during our usual off season time, plus we want to stay in more 1 or 2-bedroom villas each trip.

Treating the family/grown kids/grandkids is why we got into DVC but it really depletes the points. However, they have to find their own way there (that means pay for it too), buy their own tickets and pay for their own food. My daughter has noticed that their "free" trip to Disney was costing her a fortune. :rotfl:

This is me, except on the other end. My mom is the one that owns the DVC points and is using all her points for my sister and I, our spouses, and some extended family to stay all at the same time. She's eating up all her points for 2014 and some of 2015, which means she and my dad wont be able to go the next two years at all. I try to convince her to let us pay for more but she doesn't listen, she said the reason she wanted DVC in the first place was to get to spend her time with family on Disney vacations. I feel like we should be contributing more. I hate mooching especially now that I am capable of paying my own way, I don't mind paying to spend time with family! :-/

Well here it is August of 2013. I have an October use year but will be staying at OKW for ten days at the beginning of September which will finish up my 2013 points. So I've borrowed all my 2013 points into 2012. That great deal DVCers got on the PAP last year is the reason for this upcoming trip- getting another trip in before it expires! I have reservations for next June at VGC that have more than half of my 2014 points used up. So it might be awhile before an Oct. 1st rolls around when I will "get" a full contingent of my yearly points. Even with all of this borrowing, I have stayed off property in California to conserve points and to be near family members who are not staying at the GC.

But when I look at what I have done with my points I am happy. My home resort (VGC) is a points hog -so that's a factor. I was able to send my daughter and a friend to Aulani as a graduation gift (another points hog) so I see how I got here. I am contemplating whether to add on, but trying to resist as I am a relatively new DVC owner and have had a couple graduation gifts to spend points on - that wont happen every year.

I completely agree with your DH. Also the PP who said the kids need to take care of themselves.

Don't take this the wrong way, it's fabulous that you can share with your kids. Yet, as an adult child myself I would feel horribly guilty and that I was taking advantage of you. Let them be adults and buy their own contract. If they aren't able to at this time in their life then they need to cut back on their vacations. Are you paying for their whole trip?!? They could skip a few trips and save that money using it to buy their own resale contract. Then this wouldn't be an issue.

Let them be adults and buy their own contract.

My youngest daughter and her husband do have their own contract. They still think it's a bit unfair that we treat the other 2 and not them.

They are treating his family next year..........I may demand equal treatment. :rotfl:

There are many ways to stretch points. Take advantage of specials, rent non timeshares off property for non DVC stays, do non Disney trips, cruises on cash, etc, etc. Just plan and get ahead then you can start over.

We never thought it would cover all of our "Orlando" vacation needs. We didn't even think it was going to cover all of our Disney vacation needs. All we thought was that we were pre-paying for Disney resort accommodations that would cover a trip a year. However it definitely helps put a 'dent' in the outputting of "cash" for our accommodations at Disney and the accommodations are 'nicer' than what we would have put ourselves in if we didn't have DVC.

For us, our acquisition of DVC came around the same time as our income started getting larger so though we credit DVC for 'giving' us better vacations, we now go to other places and spend cash. We are now realizing that these bigger vacations would have come about no matter what.
