Hi,

I hope someone can help me with this. Though I’m a Disney veteran (over 17 trips), I’m not overly familiar with DVC. I did one of the sales pitches when in Disney quite a few years ago, but forgot most of it. Anyway, this year I’m planning on renting points from a friend of my husband. I have to wait until Jan. 31 for them to make my reservations because of the 7 month-out rule. So here’s my question. The amount of points they have available limits my options for rooms and locations. If I need more points for the room(s) I want, can they “buy” more from Disney? I don’t want to ask them to borrow from next year’s points as they use their points, but if they can buy extra points from Disney to be able to make this reservation, I will of course pay along with the cost to rent their points. I’m talking about needing an additional 45-50 points. They’re nice enough to offer their points for a good price and I don’t want to bother them with tons of questions and requests, so I’d rather know before we finalize the reservations and such what I can ask them to do. If you can buy extra points for a one-time trip from Disney, do you know how much it costs a point? They’re home resort is Saratoga Springs and I would like reservations at Boardwalk Villas.

Thanks so much for your help – I really appreciate it!

In a word, "No".. they cannot buy extra points for one-time use.

Also - depending on how many points they have, needing an extra 50 points is actually ALOT of points for some people. Especially if they use their points.

I'd ask them the maximum # of points you can rent, and stick within that maximum to make this easy on them and not make them "borrow."

ETA: Assume that at 7 months out for BWV you will be forced to use the Preferred View points totals for your trip. Chances are, they will not be able to book you a Standard view to save points at 7 months out.

Just my .02 cents!

Thanks for the info. They have 127 points. I was looking at a 2 bedroom villa at BW with standard view - they don't have enough points for preferred. My dates are Aug 31 - Sept 5. I can also get a 2 bedroom at Old Key West for the same points and from what I see there's a better chance for that - so that would be my 2nd choice - the main reason I want BW is location. It's easy to get to places from there - especially the walk to EPCOT. Funny, but their home resort (Saratoga Springs) is more points than BW Standard. Oh well I guess I have to wait until the 31st to find out.

Thanks again!

That's exactly why the standard view books up quickly. It is hard to get that at 7 months out.

There are two other possibilities for points......if your need 50 more the owner could.

1) Get a transfer from another member and pay them - roughly $500 @ $10 per point to use for your reservation.

2) Stay a night on cash....I believe that can be linked to the reservation. I've never done this and am truly unaware of the rules.

You're not actually "renting points", but renting a reservation.

It's 7 months from checkout - they will have to wait until Feb 5 to make the entire reservation.

You can mix points and cash on a reservation, but any given night must be one or the other.
