Thank you for letting me lurk about the board. I am learning a lot about membership and it is helping us determine if DVC is a good fit for us.

I hope you can answer a question or two for us. Is it better for us to purchase a DGC point contract if that is where we will spend the bulk of our vacation time? How much time are current members given to purchase before the points are offered to the general public?

We live on the west coast. We love WDW but don't travel to FL nearly as often as CA. We also like to visit the OR coast regularly. We like the flexibility of the DVC point system and the possibility of using our points at destinations other than Disney.

After reading, I have noticed that current members are guessing that 1) it might be difficult for nonmembers to buy into DGC when it is offered, and 2) it might be difficult for members to book this resort at the 7 month window.

Is it going to be difficult for me purchase a DGC contract? Is it worth it for 10 days per year?

If GCV is where you will likely stay the most, then that is probably where you should buy. I would contact DVC now and get the materials and establish contact with a guide. They will be able to advise you and will put a note in your file that you are interested in GCV. Most of the concern over availability there is that it will be a VERY small DVC to start with, and will probably be very popular with folks such as yourseves who are west coast based. We are "middle of the country" owners, so either one is about the same distance. We prefer the size and variety at WDW, so we would probably not be likely to purchase at GCV. I think it is worth it to get on a contact list sooner rather than later.

I will contact my guide today about that "contact list" idea. I agree it would be better to be near the top of the list rather than the bottom.

Speaking as an East Coast member, I have no plans to purchase GCV points. While I know that there are currently only 50 2 br lockoffs planned, (50 1br and 50 studios) I have to believe that there will be points available for new members to buy. I do think that it will be tough for those of us who don't own GCV to get in at 7 months, though.

Thanks Ed. I am hoping you are correct. If not, we will continue to vacation at Disney as we currently do. We love Disney, something for everyone in the family. However, we do have other destinations on our "vacation wish list". Maybe, DVC really isn't for us. We seem to vacation at Disney about every three years. We might be better off playing the "code/discount" game and keeping our money free for other destinations in the off years. I believe I read that using DVC points for "other destinations" isn't the best value anyway.
