Have you stayed at a Days Inn lately? I am going to dispute it’s value as an asset based on the condition of some of them....Owning DVC points is a liability, where owning a Days Inn is an asset.
Of course, you have to manage both to get maximum value out of them.

And, haven’t I heard that some managers are renting rooms by the hour (against company policy) to make some side money...You couldn't pay ME to stay at a Days Inn... The locations near me (Chicago) are filthy and not safe.

When I purchased DVC, I recognized that I was buying into a premium experience versus staying off site at a hotel. I have no regrets in my choice. While I do not travel to WDW as much now (retired and traveling internationally), my children go frequently and we manage the points usage effectively to avoid losing any points.
Not really fair to say. I live in Chicago area and have actually been to a very nice one. They're all (or at least mostly) franchised, so it's just a coin flip.
