DVC members shipping packages home

Okay! We are going to WDW and staying @ SSR December 19th through 24th. We are then going to Grandma's house the 24th through the 28th. Grandma lives in Indiana.

DH and I have decided we will purchase our own Christmas presents in WDW if we see anything we like Grandma has already warned us about how many presents DD will be bringing home from her house. So, how do we ship home (Oregon) items from WDW? We will not have a car. We plan on taking a towncar back and forth from the airport to SSR. Will the resort be able to help us with shipping items back to Oregon?

I can't answer about SSR. We have shipped packages home many times from the BWV, however. There is a business center in the convention center at the BWV and they will box it and ship it for you. They just add it to your bill when you check out.

I've often shipped things I bought at the parks or DTD directly from the stores where I purchased. Usually takes about 10 to 14 days to get them, but that's better than packing the stuff!

We do try to plan a little bit so that we send a lot of what we want in the same shipment by purchasing at a "Disney One Stop" like Mouse Gears or WOD.

Usually the FL sales tax and the shipping costs are about the same, or maybe a little more.

We always ship stuff back. Just bring it to the front desk of the resort and tell them which shipping option you would like(ground, 3-day, etc). We usually do it the day of check out and they take care of it for us and just charge it to our card we leave at check in!

I ship them when I purchase them. It then becomes tax free.
It seemed silly to purchase the item, pay the tax, and then pay for the shipping.

How many points does it cost to stay at Grandma's house? Can I book my stay there at the 7-month window through MS or should I call Grandma direct? What's the scoop on refillable mugs at Grandma's house?

Why do you not pay tax?

If you ship do they automatically bill you like it was ordered from your home state? We are from Oregon and do not have a sales tax. So, would that mean no FL sales tax, but we would be charged for shipping?

they don't charge tax on something shipped out of state. There is no tax, nada, zip. They don't do business in any other state but FL, so, they don't have to charge tax. You will be charged for shipping, but, it sure is less than buying it, paying tax and taking it to the resort to pay for shipping. You are saving a little here and there.

I am surprised they don't weasel into some sales tax somehow... the fact that the shops don't is good info to know. Is that true for all of them? I wonder if say, the Disney Store in Orlando on I-drive would still charge tax, if you have a Disney store in your state (i.e. treat it like a catalog or internet order). Probably not -- they probably don't have the capability in the store to assess what your state's tax is and then get it back to your state. Hmmm.

So is it a fairly true statement that one can expect shipping (via ground, should I assume?) to be about 6-7% of your purchase price (roughly even with the Florida sales tax)? And is it also safe to say it takes over a week? I wouldn't want my pkgs waiting for me -- I'd rather they came once I was back home. Might want to wait, therefore, towards the end of the trip to buy?

The Disney store is a dfferent animal, it does business in most of the US states, so, they would charge you tax. I ran into this at a non Disney store, but, they charged me my state's tax rather than the tax from FL.

Disney does not weasel the sales tax, that is paid to the state.
It takes a good week to get the stuff to your home. I purchased an carved Ostrich egg the day before we left and it was delivered about a week AFTER I got home.

But that does vary some, depending on the size of the item you're shipping, how busy the shipping center happens to be, etc. We have occasionally had things delivered before we got home, our next door neighbor watches out for our house, so we let them know if we ship anything. So yes, I would wait until a day or two prior to departure to buy anything I want shipped.

Hi! I know this is an old thread but it came up when I did a search.

We live in England, but have friends in Ontario, Canada as well as New Jersey

So when I purchase them a gift at World Of Disney or somewhere can I fill in the green form and instead of having it sent to my resort I could have it sent to my friends?

Is it more or less expensive than buying the item, wrapping it and sending it US mail?

Or could I just send it from the front desk at SSR?

Sorry for the silly questions, being English I have no idea about US mail. It would save me bringing it home and mailing it!

When you purchase something and have it shipped home, you can tell them to delay the shipping until a certain date to make sure you are home when the package gets delivered.

Purchase made @ Disney's Days of Christmas 9/1/04

Total of ornaments $50.00

Shipping $10.95 (wow!)

Tax saved $3.97

so we figured the shipping actually cost about $6.95 which is better!

There are 4 ornaments coming and they are not heavy.

Today is 9-13-04 and we have yet to receive the package. I will wait a couple of days before I make a phone call. Speedy shipping (NO), expensive shipping (YES). This was an experiment to see if we want to ship itmes home more frequently.

Regarding State sales tax, don't know about other states, but in Indiana you must pay state sales tax on any item you have shipped to you. So if you purchase an item in Florida and pay Florida tax, then no Indiana tax is due. But if you don't pay the Florida sales tax because you have it shipped home, then you must pay the Indiana sales tax on it.

If the seller collects the Indiana tax (because they have stores also in Indiana and are required to collect it, such as the Disney stores), then you're all done. But if the seller doesn't collect the tax for you, (such as at downtown Disney) then you must pay it in April as part of your State income tax filing. (Calculate any State income tax due and add any State sales taxes that were not paid on mail order items, etc, and that's what you pay)

This includes any internet purchases, mail-order purchases, out of state purchases that are shipped, magazine subscriptions, and so on, wherever the seller didn't collect the sales tax.

Don't know if other states are similar, but here we pay the sales tax, one way or the other.

I'll have to watch my receipt next time.... I just came back and had some gifts sent home from BVG in the Contemporary and I payed tax and shipping Oh well, better than lugging it home

I am a HUGE advocate of buying while I am at Disney and shipping it home or shipping gifts, etc.

I thought Orlando sales tax was 8% but I could be wrong. To me that $10.95 seems pretty reasonable.

Just for comparison....some mailorder rates...
DisneyStore.com----$30 to $50 = $7.95 shipping
L.L. Bean---$25.01 to $75.00 = $6.95 shipping
Lands’ End---$25.01 to $50.00 = $5.95 (and up)
Lillian Vernon---$40.01 to $50.00 = $9.95

I LOVE being able to see "it" in person, feel it, try it on, etc. when I am there in person-----"returns" are my biggest frustration about mailorder.

I have watched parents breaking their necks struggling with giant castles and stuff and I just HOPE they are driving an 18-wheeler back to their homes.

It is also fun to get calls from my sister's kids, friends, etc. because they have received surprise packages.

One warning about mailing from the resorts at the end of your trip---Just MY experience, YMMV.....
A few years ago, I needed to ship some items from the Contemporary, so I went downstairs to the shipping place (don't remember what they called it). The actual packer/shipper was not there, but I was assured it would be taken care of. Sure enough, a couple of weeks later the three boxes arrived safely and nicely packed......................HOWEVER, I was charged $53 PER BOX!! My husband and I almost croaked when $159 was added to our credit card! So, if you are going to ship previous purchases from the resort, get an amound up front.

So now I SHIP WHEN I SHOP!! And I have certainly never come close to $159 in shipping again, adding together everything I have bought.

You do need to pay attention to your receipts (the tax is added on, then removed at the very end) because sometimes they accidentally forget because it does have to be keyed in differently.

Just my opinions.

Florida sales tax is 6.5%. We just bought a print in the gift shop at BC and had it shipped home, primarily because we didn't want to deal with it on the plane. I completely forgot that they don't charge the sales tax.

The shipping was $10.95, but our total tax would have been $5 and some change, so I look at as only having to pay an additional $5 for shipping. Totally worth it to me!
